The Chiefs will look to build on immediate contributions of 2019 draft class with help from the 2020 draft class.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ draft class from last season was really good. Mecole Hardman was an impact returner and should grow as a receiver this season. Juan Thornhill, if he is able to return from injury, was an immediate starter and could resume his role.

Even Khalen Saunders, the FCS level defensive tackle, emerged late in the season. Rashad Fenton had moments as well.

As I said, I expect the Chiefs to go defensive heavy in this draft, leery of preparation and development time an offensive player may need to learn Andy Reid’s offense in what could be a shortened offseason. It’s better to build up defensive depth, as the offense does bring back contributors, and the organization can replenish on offense next offseason.

What would be really great is if members of the 2018 draft class can contribute. Breeland Speaks has not looked really good since he arrived and O’Daniel had a moment or two, but has done little. Armani Watts could fill in for Thornhill if he’s unable to go and Derrick Nnadi is a starter along the defensive interior.

Positions I did not address of note:

  • Running Back – The Chiefs might target an undrafted back if not multiple, but it would be a lot to ask a running back to come in and learn the Chiefs system and compete with the depth currently on the roster
  • Offensive Line – The Chiefs return four of the five starters from last year, with Martinas Rankin coming back from injury, Mike Remmers signed in free agency and Nick Allegretti still on the roster.
