Trading Up

I do not see this happening unless the Chiefs REALLY have a crush on a player. We can’t rule it out, though.

Veach is known for making big trades, and he always tries to get “his guys.” This is the hardest to speculate about, simply because the Chiefs keep their plans close to the vest and you never really know who Veach and Andy Reid covet until they make their move.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

My guess is if this were to unfold, the Chiefs wouldn’t be making any major moves like they did when they moved up 17 spots to draft Patrick Mahomes. Instead, a guy they really want could take a draft day slide, and a team a few spots ahead of the Chiefs with a need at that position could be interested. That could prompt Kansas City to move up a spot or two to make sure they secure their guy.

For example, Patrick Queen or Kenneth Murray could be falling, and the Chiefs have a great grade on those players. They look to see that the Baltimore Ravens pick at 28, and the Ravens have a need at linebacker.

The Chiefs could then get on the phone with the Seattle Seahawks, trade up to pick 27 and select their guy. This would not only get the Chiefs a player they want, but stop a potential rival like Baltimore from landing him.

Regardless of what the team decides to do, we can generally trust Brett Veach to make the right decision. He has a track record of sustained success since taking over as the general manager, and this year looks to continue to make smart moves to help the team moving forward.

Kansas City will keep all their options open, and I for one am excited about the prospect of entering the draft with a first round pick for the first time since the exciting selection of Patrick Mahomes.
