Cornerback is one of the KC Chiefs’ biggest needs this offseason and the 2020 NFL Draft might be the best way for them to fill that need. In the most recent CBS Sports draft, they select A.J. Terrell at pick 32.

After winning the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs were on top of the football world, but they also need to make sure they keep their roster in tip top shape. The cornerback position has already lost Kendall Fuller, who signed with the Washington Redskins.

Bashaud Breeland hasn’t landed anywhere yet and while it’d be nice for him to come back to Kansas City, their lack of cap space money could prevent that from happening. Because they only have Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton manning the cornerback spot at the moment, it wouldn’t be crazy to see the Chiefs spend the 32nd overall pick on a corner.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports has the Chiefs doing just that in his most recent mock draft. The pick is A.J. Terrell out of Clemson, who played in two National Championship games during his time with the Tigers.

Brinson had this to say about why it’d make sense for the Chiefs to grab Terrell,

"The Chiefs are trying to keep building a roster that can help them in the title defense and they’re gonna need help on the back end to pull it off."

Brinson isn’t wrong about that. The Chiefs are mostly set on the offensive side of the ball, but it wasn’t until the defense became what it was that put the team over the top. Keeping the defense up to snuff is key this offseason and taking a corner in round one is a good strategy.

Terrell spent three seasons at Clemson and totaled 101 tackles, 13 passes defensed, and six interceptions with one getting returned for a touchdown. He’d be a good addition to the Chiefs secondary, but my argument here is that I don’t think he’s necessarily a first round pick. He might not be available at pick 63, however, so if the Chiefs really wanted him, they should take him when they can.

Unless the Chiefs find a way to bring Breeland back for 2020, them drafting a cornerback is a given. They likely won’t be waiting until the sixth round to draft one this year like they did a year ago with Fenton and with only five draft picks, they’ll have to prioritize what positions need the most help. Cornerback is certainly one of those.

How would you feel about the KC Chiefs drafting A.J. Terrell in the first round?
