Could the Detroit Lions be willing to part with potentially a big draft pick to acquire KC Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones? Time to explore a potential trade between the two teams.

Brett Veach has  shown a willingness to take unique approaches to trades and not afraid to take a chance. The Detroit Lions are an organization many view as needing to show significant improvement and make the playoffs to save the jobs of the head coach Matt Patricia and the general manager Bob Quinn. After disappointments the past two seasons, the heat is on.

Which brings us to Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Lions could be a potential landing spot for Jones, and I previously looked at what a three-team trade between the Chiefs, Lions, and Dolphins involving Jones might entail. Now, here’s an option that lands the Lions Chris Jones and the Chiefs the potential of a top pick.

Why this makes sense for the Chiefs

If the Chiefs are not going to bring back Chris Jones, then they are going to target the best trade offer. We earlier discussed a trade possibility with the Arizona Cardinals, and so in this, the big winner for the Chiefs is that 2021 first round pick and what it could eventually become.

Could the Chiefs go into the 2021 draft with a top 12 selection? Maybe?

The third round selection would be – in what is in my opinion – a fairly strong draft, a solid selection, and could be a depth contributor in 2020 and hopefully become a starter in 2021.

If the Chiefs look to acquire veterans on short-term deals this year, that could allow for the third round rookie to learn for a year and then start for three seasons on a rookie contract.

Why this makes sense for the Lions

The Detroit Lions, with the third overall selection this year, are in what appears from a distance to be a make or break season.

If the Washington Redskins do truly have an interest in Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, that would leave the Lions the option to target the top defensive player on the board in addition to adding Chris Jones and not having a ‘price being paid’ until the third round.

Their hope would be the addition of Jones in addition to either Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons or Jeffrey Okudah would help the defense be strong enough to potentially carry the team to the playoffs or close to it. The Lions, in theory, could add multiple players that could immediately contribute, paying the big price later on.

We’ve seen that Brett Veach likes top picks, opting to trade Dee Ford last offseason for a pick this year to increase the total value. Could Veach opt to do the same with a Chris Jones trade?

Doing so, and if the Lions struggle, the KC Chiefs could find themselves to find a potentially true impact rookie.
