If and when the KC Chiefs look to trade Chris Jones, could the Arizona Cardinals be a potential trade partner? What might a deal look like?

With sports on hiatus, we continue to look at what the Kansas City Chiefs could command in a trade for franchise tagged defensive lineman Chris Jones.

The Arizona Cardinals make sense as a trade partner for Jones’ services, and they have a few options that would entice Brett Veach and could make a deal happen.

Here’s my trade idea.

Why this makes sense for the Chiefs

The second round selection provides the Chiefs a nice spot, giving them four selections between the 32nd spot and 96th. For an organization in need of depth on their roster and affordable contributing talent, this pick here would be a huge pickup.

For a team in need of maybe multiple cornerbacks due to Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller‘s potential departures in free agency, Byron Murphy started all 16 games during the 2019 season as a rookie.

With Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson likely departing this offseason, Andy Isabella provides depth for the organization at the position. He is the fast, undersized type of player Andy Reid appears to favor (ran a 4.31 forty at the combine in 2019).

Why this makes sense for the Cardinals

Moving on from Murphy obviously hurts, though Isabella wasn’t a starter for the Cardinals who have both Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk in front of him. The Cardinals still have Hakeem Butler – their fourth round selection from last year – on the roster as well.

The second round selection, when acquiring an emerging star pass rusher, isn’t a huge hit. With the rookie quarterback, cap room won’t be a huge issue for a few years.

Jones fits best as a defensive end in the Cardinals 3-4 defensive front, and should prove capable of providing an impact for the Cardinals from moment he steps on the field. Patrick Peterson is still with the team at least through this season, so what could the Cardinals do from there on the defensive side of the ball?

Chuck Harris covers the Cardinals for the USA Today and had this trade proposal idea on Twitter. Instead of Isabella and Murphy, he put in Patrick Peterson.

This is a deal that sounds great on the screen, but does’t make sense in reality. Peterson is 30 and would probably want a new deal from the Chiefs, and that might lead the team to run into the same issues with a Peterson extension that they’d run into with Chris Jones.

It will be interesting to see what happens here. There are various trade options for Chris Jones and it certainly appears more and more likely he could be playing elsewhere next season.
