Running Back

1. Matt Breida, San Fransisco 49ers

Matt Breida may be the fastest running back in the NFL, so of course, he would fit in with the Chiefs. Breida should be a pretty affordable option and the one-two punch of Breida and Damien Williams would be a very exciting running back tandem.

Could there be two cheetahs running wild in Arrowhead next season?

2. Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns

Now look, I know this is a pretty unlikely and controversial reunion, but signing Kareem Hunt would make sense. The only issue is how will it look from a PR standpoint?

Everyone knows the trouble he got himself into in Kansas City, but he signed with the Browns last season and did his best to repair his image. If the Chiefs can forgive his past dishonesty and believe that he is a matured, changed man and can make it through the slander they’d undoubtedly get for the signing, both sides would love to make this happen.

3. Jordan Howard, Philadelphia Eagles

Jordan Howard came into the NFL, exploding onto the scene as a rookie in 2016, finishing second in the league in rushing yards. He followed that up in 2017 by finishing third in rushing touchdowns. Since then it has been downhill for Howard though.

Howard could look to come to a championship contender with an excellent offense on a one-year prove-it deal to try to revive his career. An offense like Kansas City’s could be the perfect place for him.

The one thing working against him though is that, unlike the rest of the running backs on this list, he is not a receiving threat whatsoever. This may ultimately rule him out of consideration for the Chiefs because we all know how much Andy Reid loves to use his running backs in the receiving game.

4. Chris Thompson, Washington Redskins

Chris Thompson is as great of a pass-catching running back as it comes, which would make him a perfect fit for the Chiefs’ pass-heavy offense. He will also be very affordable.

He is approaching 30 and is a zero threat in the run game though so, while the fit is good, he may not be the best bang for your buck in free agency.

5. Ty Montgomery, Green Bay Packers

Ty Montgomery is a former wide receiver turned running back, who could also be an excellent fit for the Chiefs. If used correctly in an offense like Kansas City’s, he could become a better version of Thompson.

Montgomery has natural hands from his wide receiver background, but also has better size than Thompson and has had some success in the ground game as well with a very respectable 5.9 yards per carry in 2016 in his first year as a running back. I would love to see how creative Andy Reid could get with a guy like Montgomery in his offense.

Wrapping Up

It’s kind of hard to predict the Kansas City Chiefs offseason right now, as they really need to make decisions on Chris Jones and Sammy Watkins before they can start looking at free agents and get serious about a draft plan.

Until those big decisions are made, it is probably safest to say the Chiefs will lean more toward the cheaper options on this list to fill out their roster.

It also can’t be overlooked that the KC Chiefs have various other needs not included on this list.

For example, a back up tight end is another position of need that could be addressed in free agency, so there are a lot of dominoes still to fall. However, hopefully, this list is helpful in providing a good idea of potential free agents that the Chiefs could be taking a look at.
