KC Chiefs: Five free agents to target at five positions of need
By Shade Piper
Wide Receiver
1. Robby Anderson, New York Jets
You’ve probably started to notice a trend with the top player at each position. They are all likely higher than what the Chiefs will be willing or even have the cap space to pay. This stays true with Robby Anderson.
Anderson is really benefiting from an overall pretty weak wide receiver free agent class and will likely get overpaid. However, I do like Anderson, and Kansas City is probably one of, if not the, best place for him to be able to maximize his potential.
Anderson’s speed added to an offense already featuring Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman (and maybe Sammy Watkins?) with Patrick Mahomes throwing them the ball would just be unfair.
2. Emmanuel Sanders, San Fransisco 49ers
What’s that old saying? “If you can’t beat them, join them?”
Emmanuel Sanders has to be sick of losing to the Chiefs, first in Denver and then in the Super Bowl with the 49ers. Maybe the Chiefs give him a chance to win and sign him to a one-year prove-it deal to show he’s still got something left in the tank on their way to another Chiefs Super Bowl victory. It sounds like a match made in heaven to me.
The big thing here is that Sanders did screw the Chiefs over several years ago by saying he’d sign with them and then going to Denver and signing there instead. Don’t think that Chiefs fans don’t remember that.
3. Taylor Gabriel, Chicago Bears
Speed is the key trait here with Taylor Gabriel. He fits in perfectly with the Chiefs’ offensive makeup and would make a great addition to the Legion of Zoom.
Gabriel is not going to come out and be a big possession receiver for Mahomes, but he could be yet another option to help stretch the field making this speedy offense even more difficult to defend.
4. De’Mornay Pierson-El, St. Louis Battlehawks
Last week we looked at XFL targets for the Chiefs and the XFL’s top wide receiver, Cam Phillips, was discussed as the top wide receiver option for the Chiefs. However, on this list, we are going to discuss De’Mornay Pearson-El.
Pearson-El doesn’t have the stand out stats that Phillips had in the XFL, but he is much more versatile and projects to be a Deebo Samuel-like wide receiver in the NFL. He is great as a returner and can be used on reverses and sweeps with his playmaking ability, but also can be a speedy option out wide or in the slot.
Pearson-El could be the best XFL prospect.
5. Dez Bryant, Free Agent
Dez Bryant is another free agent target discussed in-depth in a previous article. Bryant’s best days are behind him, but he is still a sure-handed receiver with size and apparent increasing chemistry with Kansas City’s star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who can likely be signed to a veterans minimum salary.
