Wide receiver was a position of strength for the KC Chiefs last year, but will likely see a few new faces next season. Who would’ve guessed that Dez Bryant would be discussed as one of those potential new faces?

Dez Bryant played his last NFL snap back in 2017, so it would normally be crazy for the Kansas City Chiefs to even consider picking up a player like that. Does he really have anything left in the tank? Last time he played, he was having trouble creating separation and that was two seasons ago.

Now I did say it would normally be crazy, so why might it not be crazy in this situation you might be asking? Everyone has heard the saying “happy wife, happy life” before and a similar statement rings true for the Chiefs: “happy MVP, happy Chiefs.”

So what does that statement have to do with signing Bryant potentially not being crazy? Because it appears that Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes (and Mecole Hardman too) would love to play with Bryant. Again “happy MVP, happy Chiefs.”

Let’s just do a quick review of the social media craze over the past few weeks of Bryant and Mahomes’ interactions.

First, there was the workout just a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl that featured Bryant running routes and catching balls from the MVP. This workout is really what started the social media craze, but it didn’t stop there.

After the workout, Bryant tweeted that Mahomes was his and his son’s favorite NFL player. Bryant tweeted this in response to a Mahomes tweet from 2013 that surfaced claiming that Bryant was Mahomes’ favorite player.

Hardman has had twitter interactions with Bryant dating back to December as well and Tyreek Hill was even briefly part of those interactions. Since the season has ended, Hardman has been working out with Bryant along with Mahomes and it appears that they have another workout set up for next week.

Not only have Mahomes and Bryant been publicly discussing their respect for one another and working out together, but recently they were even spotted hanging out together court side at a Dallas Mavericks game.

This may turn out to be nothing, but it does appear that Mahomes at least has a lot of respect for Bryant and maybe even a friendship. Is this enough alone to bring him in for training camp?

Usually no, but Mahomes is not a normal player and who knows what they would do to keep him happy. I’m sure Mahomes would endorse it, but does Bryant actually have enough left in the tank to be worth a look?

Leigh Oleszczak of KC Kingdom wrote briefly about kicking the tires on signing Bryant a few of weeks ago, but let’s dig into it a little more. As discussed in Leigh’s article, the need is there for the Chiefs.

Demarcus Robinson is likely going to cash in on his Super Bowl success with another team this offseason and it is even more apparent now than at the time of our last article that Sammy Watkins will also be sporting a different uniform next season judging by his Twitter activity (we won’t get into this).

This means that the Chiefs will be losing two of their top three-four wide receivers from last season, so they could use some veteran depth. Does Bryant have enough left in the tank to be a wide receiver three/four for the Chiefs next season?

Per Leigh’s article,

"While having elite Bryant in Kansas City would obviously be nice, that’s not a realistic expectation to have for a 31 year old wideout. If he did join the offense, he’d surely be behind Tyreek Hill and more than likely would be behind Mecole Hardman on the depth chart as well."

As I mentioned earlier in the article, Bryant struggled with separation in 2017 when he last played. He was also still expected to be a number one receiving option at the time and was going up against opposing defenses top defensive backs. With the Chiefs, he would only be expected to be a wide receiver three at most.

Bryant himself said he no longer needs to be the main guy and in fact, wants to be in a place where he’s not the focal point because he believes he can still be successful in that manner. Bryant could have success against teams’ third or fourth cornerbacks as well, especially with Mahomes passing to him.

One thing Bryant has always had is great hands, and that appears to still ring true today. He may actually have even better hands than when we last saw him. The workout video above absolutely blows my mind. Sure, it’s just a workout, but he is catching rockets being flung at him from about seven yards with one hand while laying on his back. That is crazy no matter how you spin it.

When playing with Mahomes, having great hands alone could be enough to have success with the way he is able to create for his teammates. Again, going up against cornerback three/fours Bryant should be able to create separation in most cases.

As long as Bryant comes into training camp knowing that he is competing for a shot and is not guaranteed a spot, I don’t see the harm in at least giving him a chance. Bryant seems to have matured a lot and could be a very motivated veteran presence to help lead this Chiefs’ wide receiver corps.

Again, this buzz may amount to nothing, but if Patrick Mahomes gives his endorsement of Dez Bryant to GM Brett Veach, then this is a move that Chiefs Kingdom should be able to get behind.

What do y’all think? Could you see Dez Bryant throwing up his ‘X’ in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform next season?
