The KC Chiefs only have five picks in the 2020 NFL Draft and they have some big time needs to address. Is wide receiver one of those needs? It is in this recent mock draft.

Tre LyDay of FanSided was nice enough to put together a seven-round mock draft for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have just five picks and none after the fifth round, but it’d be foolish to think they’ll only roll with those five selections. No, Brett Veach is going to add draft capital one way or another and the Chiefs will end draft weekend with more than just five picks.

LyDay’s mock started with the Chiefs grabbing a wide receiver with their first round pick. The selection was Tee Higgins out of Clemson, who impressed everyone this season with 59 receptions for 1,167 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Chiefs could lose both Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson this offseason, so wide receiver is a need, just not a first round need. With how deep this year’s receiver class is, taking one at pick 32 seems unnecessary.

In round two, LyDay had the Chiefs going with Bryce Hall, a cornerback out of Virginia. While I don’t see Hall falling to pick 63, he’d be a nice fit for the Chiefs. They’ll need a corner because it’s very likely that both Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller depart this offseason, leaving KC with just Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton in 2020.

The third round saw the Chiefs add Troy Dye, who is a linebacker out of Oregon. The Chiefs should always be looking to upgrade at linebacker when they can and Dye would be a nice pick here. LyDay wrote,

"His size allows him to run with people in coverage, but that same size gets him in trouble in the run game. He will struggle with more physical players on the line of scrimmage, but he would be a serviceable weak side linebacker while being on the field in non-obvious run downs."

In the fourth round, LyDay had Kansas City picking up another safety – J.R. Reed of Georgia. The Chiefs’ safety group improved immensely this past season with the addition of Tyrann Mathieu in free agency and rookie Juan Thornhill was on his way to a truly special rookie season until he got hurt at the end of the season.

With Daniel Sorensen, Armani Watts, and Jordan Lucas‘ futures all up in the air, bringing in a safety via the draft is a wise move. Reed would provide someone with a lot of experience and could potentially be someone who is slotted in from day one.

With their final pick in this 2020 mock draft, the Kansas City Chiefs went with Michael Onwenu, who played center and guard at Michigan. This is an interesting pick because Mel Kiper actually had the Chiefs going with Cesar Ruiz out of Michigan in his second mock draft and Ruiz is also a center and guard.

It’s no secret that the Chiefs need to add depth to their offensive line and Onwenu could be a nice piece there. I’d prefer to see KC go with an o-lineman earlier on in the draft, but this would be a nice late draft selection.

What do you think of these selections?
