It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs need help at cornerback this offseason and the draft might be the best way to address the position.

Charley Casserly of NFL.com agrees with that sentiment and had the Kansas City Chiefs selecting a cornerback with the 32nd pick in his latest mock draft. The pick was A.J. Terrell out of Clemson, who spent three years with the Tigers.

Casserly had this to say about pick 32:

"The defending champs could go OL, DE or WR (if Sammy Watkins is a cap casualty), but CB is a definite need."

It’s hard to argue with that short statement. The Chiefs need to address all of the positions Casserly listed and if a cornerback is the best player on the board at pick 32, then they should draft that player.

Terrell totaled 34 tackles, three defensed passes, two interceptions, and half a sack during his junior season at Clemson in 2019. He’d probably have wanted to enter the draft after 2018 if he could have, as he had better numbers (53 tackles and three interceptions with a pick six on his resumé) in Clemson’s National Championship title season.

With Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller both likely departing in free agency, it’s going to be vital for the Chiefs to get a young corner this offseason. The draft is probably the best place to find one and Terrell would be a good pick here.

As for the other positions Casserly noted needed addressing, this is a deep wide receiver class, so the Chiefs can take their chances in finding one on Day 2 or even Day 3 if they’re feeling lucky.

Offensive line isn’t a sexy pick, but it’s something that is needed to protect their franchise quarterback. Defensive end is another key area needing improvement and could be what the Chiefs choose to spend their first round pick on.

In 2018, the Chiefs defense was bad all around, but they still came so close to making it to the Super Bowl. In 2019, the defense took a significant jump and – as a result – won the Super Bowl. It’s important for Brett Veach to continue to keep the defense as a top priority, so grabbing a corner in round one would be wise.

Joe Marino of The Draft Network had this to say about Terrell,

"Terrell does need to add play strength and become more consistent as a tackler, but he projects as a scheme-versatile starter with an overall exciting ceiling."

The Chiefs haven’t had a first round pick since 2017 (and we all know how that pick went) and there’s a good chance they could trade out of round one this year, but if they do stay put at pick 32, A.J. Terrell could be a nice addition to the secondary in 2020.
