With a trophy in hand and players set to leave in free agency, Chiefs will need a quantity of draft picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Now that the Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid have their Lombardi Trophy, they no longer need to be giving up as much draft capital as they have been. It happened at the end of Reid’s time in Philly that eventually led to his departure as well as it lead to the implosion that was the end of the Marty Schottenheimer era in Kansas City. With that in mind, the Chiefs no longer have to feel compelled to be aggressive trading up at every point.

The Chiefs currently sit with only five picks, having traded away their sixth round pick for Darron Lee, seventh rounder for Jordan Lucas and their second round pick to Seattle to complete the Frank Clark trade (the Chiefs will have the 49ers’ second round pick).
With a need to address their depth and to fill the roster with affordable, low cost rookie contract talent, the Chiefs need to target volume, quantity, and not vying for one player as they have done in years past. The Chiefs could use help with depth at a lot of places and could certainly use more help.
Do I expect the Chiefs to select on Thursday night, the first night of the draft? I don’t, I expect them to move back and add middle round picks, which would absolutely be the right play.
Winning a trophy this season could lead to more winning. The big pressure is gone. Big picture.
As was mentioned above, the Chiefs and Reid no longer have to chase after a Lombardi because they have it now. Patrick Mahomes has a ring, Andy Reid does, the Chiefs do. Now, the organization can focus on long-term, big picture decision making that comes from confidence of having won a trophy.
Don’t expect to see this organization feeling pressure to get a title this year because they already have it. Keeping and increasing resources is key to this organization being competitive for years to come.
Soak it up Chiefs fans; The parade is the culmination and final act of a Super Bowl championship team, but the offseason starts now. The next act is about to get going, and the curtain is about to open.
