KC Chiefs can’t get too far behind vs 49ers in Super Bowl LIV

There have been multiple games this year that have started with the KC Chiefs trailing big, only to see them coming roaring back to win the game in stunning fashion. They might not be so lucky if they get down early in Super Bowl LIV.

Indeed my wife subscribes to the theory that if the Kansas City Chiefs start from behind, they will end up winning. That does seem to be a familiar pattern throughout this season, however I don’t think we should count on that pattern to give the Chiefs their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.

In the AFC Championship Game against the Titans, it was 10-0 in the first quarter. After having witnessed the seven touchdown miracle that occurred one week prior, not many Chiefs fans were probably all that worried about it, and they had no reason to be.

Against the Texans in the Divisional Round, the Chiefs were down 24-0 and the only thing the offense was responsible for was a few dropped passes and a blocked punt. The Chiefs would come back and quite literally blow the lid off the Texans.

Listen, I am taking absolutely zero credit away for what the Chiefs did against the Texans and the Titans. All I am saying is that a come from behind victory against the 49ers is not a good formula for success when it will matter most. Obviously that wasn’t the Chiefs formula in the first place, but it is crucial it not happen this time.

More than once or twice this season, the KC Chiefs have been that team that can be down a touchdown or more and still manage to pull off enough wow plays on offense with the defense stopping teams in their tracks en route to the Chiefs winning the game. The issue here is that the Chiefs have yet to face as complete of a team as the 49ers all season.

The 49ers have a few attributes that neither the Texans or Titans possess, at least not to the extent of the Niners: an absolutely stellar running game, and arguably the best defense in the league.

Everyone made such a storyline out of Derrick Henry prior to the AFC title game, but Henry is just one man and the Niners have two just like him. Matt Breida is a name that didn’t come up last week, but the Chiefs need to give him his due or he can make you pay for it, and then of course the Chiefs defense is currently doing their home work on #31 Raheem Mostert, who absolutely gashed the Packers D for 220 yards.

The Chiefs corralled Henry better than any of us could have hoped, holding him to 19 carries for only 69 yards. That’s great and all, but they will be facing two of those threats in the Super Bowl, which not only means that the Chiefs run defense must be the best its been all season, but that if they are not careful, the Niners will completely dominate the time of possession battle.

If the Chiefs get behind more than maybe 14 points, Jimmy Garoppolo will hand the ball off to Mostert or Breida and the Chiefs may never see it again. This was proven to be the Niners’ formula against the Packers, as Jimmy G only threw eight passes (completing six of them) for 77 yards. The Niners didn’t need Garoppolo to air it out much and that is because San Francisco completely and utterly dominated on the ground.

The Chiefs having to defend the run all game could be a double edged sword, however, because they need to respect the passing game and the targets of Jimmy G. He might not be the most prolific passer in the league, but as soon as the defense puts all their focus on stopping the run, the 49ers signal caller will make them pay for it over the top with a connection with tight end George Kittle or wide receivers Deebo Samuel, Dante Pettis and Emmanuel Sanders (our old AFC West nemesis).

The other attribute of this Niners team that the Chiefs have yet to face this season is probably the best defense in the league. If not the entire league, certainly better than the Texans or Titans.

  • The 49ers D is loaded with studs from top to bottom. On the defensive line, just waiting to breath fire on Patrick Mahomes is rookie Nick Bosa and a very familiar face to Chiefs fans in Dee Ford. This Niners defense demands a ton of respect, with guys like Bosa, Ford, DeForest Buckner, Kwon Alexander, and Richard Sherman, this San Francisco defense can absolutely shut down a team, even one as high flying as the Kansas City Chiefs.

This does not mean the Chiefs shouldn’t pass the ball because that is so obviously the bread and butter of this team, but if they are not behind, then they will not have reason to pass on every down and try to make every pass a bomb down field.

If Patrick Mahomes is forced to throw 50 yard bombs to try and catch up, Sherman is bound to rip one of those out of the Miami sky. The Chiefs will have the ability to stay in the drivers seat with dink and dunk passes and if they can mix in some of their own run game that would help enormously.

The Chiefs running game is beginning to find its footing, rushing for 112 total yards against the Titans. It is worth noting that 53 of those belonged to Mahomes, and as much as we all loved that 27-yard scramble that was possibly his best play all year, it’s not really a good thing when the quarterback is the leading rusher (unless you’re the Baltimore Ravens and even then – Look at where they are now).

This is one of the most evenly matched Super Bowls that we have seen in years, and a very winnable one for the Chiefs. The game plan for success is very similar to what it was for the Titans, but taken to the extreme; Stopping the run is crucial and if the Chiefs do that, it turns the Niners into a paper tiger and the Chiefs must make sure they don’t get too far behind.

With this Chiefs team and Mahomes at the helm, there is some wiggle room. They don’t necessarily need to be ahead the entire game (although that would be nice), but if they get down more than a couple touchdowns, it will greatly increase the pressure on the offense to pull off jaw dropping plays against an extremely stingy defense. It will put pressure on the Chiefs own defense to bow up more than they have all season and not give the 49ers an inch.

Bottom line – If Mahomes and the offense stays in the drivers seat, win the battle in the trenches that would hopefully make way for a serviceable running game, pick the defense apart with dink and dunk passes and shut down the Niners running game, then we will be planning the parade route through downtown.
