The last thing that Veach deserves a ton of credit for is the handling of the teams contracts.

The team has been saddled by bad contracts in the past, most notably those of Justin Houston and Eric Berry. While the players themselves were great, the health if the two faded quickly and put the team in a bad spot. Granted, Veach had also signed an injury prone player like Sammy Watkins to a big deal, but he seems to have learned his lesson by not given Dee Ford a new deal.

With the release of Berry, Houston, and Ford, Veach was able to give contracts to younger stars like Mathieu and Clark. He was also able to put enough money back for an extension to star player Tyreek Hill. All of this happened in one offseason, and the Chiefs still have money left over after free agency, the draft, and the Hill extension.

The Kansas City Chiefs are estimated to have nearly $22 million in cap space in 2020. That doesn’t take into account the fact the Chiefs are likely to move on from Watkins, as well as a few other vets, in which case the team would have even more space available.

The expectation is to use this space to extend quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Hopefully there is enough to re-sign Chris Jones, but that remains to be seen.

Regardless what the team decides to do with its current players, it is clear that they have some flexibilty and at least the ability to re-sign players back to keep the band together. That is often times not the case, and the fact that Veach was able to accomplish this while also completely rebuilding the defense AND not jeopardizing the future is completely phenomenal.

Brett Veach deserves legit consideration for Executive of the Year, and at the very least, respect from Kansas City Chiefs fans. He has earned it.
