The KC Chiefs’ season hasn’t come to an end yet, but it’s still fun to look at mock drafts anyway. CBS Sports has now released two mock drafts that has the Chiefs taking a running back in the first round.

Last week, CBS Sports had the Kansas City Chiefs going with Travis Etienne out of Clemson in the first round and now, one week removed, Chris Trapasso kept with the same position, but a different player. This time around, it’s J.K. Dobbins who Trapasso has becoming the next running back of the Chiefs.

"The Chiefs could use a bell-cow back in the Patrick Mahomes-led offense and Dobbins can undoubtedly be that featured back, as we’ve seen during his career at Ohio State."

The Chiefs need to draft a running back this spring, but taking one in the first round is usually frowned upon due to the “diminishing” value of the position. The Chiefs are very much a throw first kind of team, but when you throw in that added element of being able to run the ball, their offense is damn near unstoppable. That’s why drafting someone like J.K. Dobbins in round one wouldn’t really bother me.

Are there other positions to address? Yes, absolutely, but Dobbins could take this offense back to the 2018 level. He finished his junior campaign at Ohio State with over 2,000 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns while also grabbing two receiving scores along with 247 yards through the air.

Damien Williams isn’t the long-term answer at running back, LeSean McCoy likely isn’t back in 2020, Darrel Williams is a question mark, and Darwin Thompson needs more time to hone his skills. That means the Chiefs have to draft a running back and Dobbins might be one of the best in this entire draft.

It is interesting that this is now the second straight mock draft to have KC go with a running back in round one. Normally I’m not an advocate of drafting a running back in the first round, but if it’s a player like Dobbins or Etienne (who Trapasso mocked to the Chiefs last week), with KC having such a late first round pick, I’d let that slide.

The defense is improving and there would still be plenty of talented players to add in the second and third rounds of the draft. Kansas City should go with the best available player on their board come draft weekend, and if it’s a running back, then bring it on. I’d love to see J.K. Dobbins in this offense.
