The 2019 regular season for the Kansas City Chiefs took a lot of unexpected turns. From season-altering injuries to star players to clinching the number two playoff seed, this season has had its ups and downs.

There was one consistency through the 2019 season though, and he deserves to be the offensive MVP of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs Kingdom has grown accustomed to big-time players with incredible talent. Guys like Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill keep fans glued to their TV screens, but there is one player who keeps fans hooked and has been very consistent this season – tight end Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs were fortunate to get Kelce in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft, exceeding all other tight ends in that draft class. An injury and some immaturity hampered him early in his career, but his development into a veteran leader has been a great benefit to Kansas City.

After a few seasons, comparisons soon began between Kelce and then-New England tight end, Rob Gronkowski. While having slightly different skillsets, both players were known for having a big impact on any game they were playing in.

Terms like “Baby Gronk” began being used, but Kelce soon forged his own path to dominance as an all-time great tight end. Kelce posted his first 1,000-yard receiving season in 2016, officially becoming the most reliable and consistent target of then-Chiefs’ quarterback, Alex Smith. After a second straight 1,000-yard season, he had the full attention of the NFL.

Then came 2018 and the excitement of having Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball to the veteran stud. Obviously, that season and connection between the two didn’t disappoint. Kelce ended up breaking Gronkowski’s single-season receiving yards record by a tight end in the season finale.

Interestingly, Kelce only held the record for a very short period as San Francisco tight end George Kittle reset the record later that same day. Needless to say, Kelce still made his mark as the gold standard for all NFL tight ends with three straight seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving.

Marching on into 2019 showed no signs of regression for the multiple-time All-Pro. Finishing the regular season with 1,229 receiving yards, Kelce ranked fourth overall in receiving yards against all receivers, not just tight ends.

The most remarkable part of this, however, was that the fourth straight 1,000-yard receiving season made Kelce the only tight end in NFL history to accomplish such a feat. In the process, he also became the fastest tight end in league history to reach 450 receptions and 6,000 yards receiving.

Kelce has become so incredibly consistent that Chiefs fans could easily lose sight of just how amazing he really is. That could largely be why he was named second-team All-Pro for 2019 instead of first-team, simply because his outstanding performance has just become routine.

While Kelce may not have gotten the national recognition that he deserves, he certainly shouldn’t lose any recognition amongst Chiefs fans. It’s hard to continually top such incredible work, but Kelce may have done just that in 2019.

Through the ups and downs of a tumultuous season, Kelce stayed the course and put together another phenomenal performance. Between the injury bug and some inconsistencies, the Chiefs’ offense looked out of sorts and underperformed, especially considering expectations after last season.

Kelce seemed to rise above, always coming through at just the right moment. Even with a backup quarterback in for a few games, he continued to be Mr. Reliable for this offense. Third and long plays didn’t seem to phase Kansas City’s offense as long as Travis Kelce was in the game.

That’s why, among many reasons, he’s the 2019 Kansas City Chiefs offensive MVP.
