The KC Chiefs have one more game in 2019 and then the playoffs to follow. A storyline that should emerge once their season is over will be about the future of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and if he gets a head coaching job.

Kansas City Chiefs fans have gotten used to their offensive coordinators eventually leaving for a head coaching job of their own. Recently, we saw Matt Nagy leave for the Bears after the 2017 season and prior to that, it was Doug Pederson departing for Philadelphia to become the head coach of the Eagles in 2016.

It’s looking like, once again, the Chiefs will be losing their offensive coordinator, as Eric Bieniemy has been receiving interest dating back to last year. In total, Bieniemy had five teams contact him last year, but he only ended up interviewing with four.

Those four teams were the Bengals, Buccaneers, Dolphins, and Jets, and Bieniemy turned down speaking with the Cardinals, who had just fired their coach after one year at the helm. While all of those jobs from a year ago are obviously occupied now, don’t be surprised when the Chiefs offensive coordinator schedules several interviews.

You can probably cross Bieniemy off of the more attractive jobs like Dallas, but he could be a fit for a team like Redskins or Jaguars. The Redskins in particular would be a decent fit, seeing how they have a good run game and Bieniemy himself used to be a running back during his days at Colorado.

The Redskins also have a young quarterback, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes head coaches like to be the one selecting their quarterback, but other times, it ends up being a good fit.

Should Bieniemy leave, the KC Chiefs will once again have a vacant offensive coordinator position to fill this offseason. One would think the Chiefs would promote from within, meaning Mike Kafka (quarterbacks coach), Greg Lewis (wide receivers coach), or Tom Melvin (tight ends coach) would have a decent shot at landing the gig.

Out of those three, Melvin has been in Kansas City the longest, currently in year five now. We’ve seen how well he’s done with Travis Kelce, and he’s in the 19th year of his coaching career, so perhaps year 20 would be a big one for Melvin.

Eric Bieniemy will have plenty of opportunities this offseason to find his next job in the NFL, so don’t be surprised if the Kansas City Chiefs are once again looking to fill the void at offensive coordinator.
