The exciting part about the potential for defensive improvement is that the Kansas City Chiefs will be building on an already improved defense from 2019.

Between free agency, trades, and the draft, Kansas City will have a solid platform to build on. With the addition of the right pieces, this defense could move from top-20 to top-10.

If the offense can regain its dominance from 2018 and the defense raises the bar, this Chiefs team will be even better in 2020. In order for that to happen, Brett Veach and the defensive staff will have to keep the right free agents and bring in the right free agents.

There are other notable free agent names like Green Bay’s Blake Martinez and Cleveland’s Joe Schobert. It’s not likely, though, that these teams will want to let go of some of their better defenders. In the off-chance that they do, it’s likely that the Chiefs will do their homework on players like these.

There may be others as well, but then it comes down to questions of positional need and cost, especially with some bigger contracts already on the horizon.

Where the offensive side of the ball is needing more of a light house-cleaning, the defense is still under construction and will take more of an effort to get lined up. It’ll be interesting to see what this coming offseason holds for the Chiefs’ 2020 defensive roster.
