KC Chiefs: Top five MVP candidates heading into week 11
By Gage Stagner
Number 1 – RussellWilson, QB, Seattle Seahawks
The most overrated underrated quarterback in the NFL.
Let’s stop talking about how we don’t talk about Russell Wilson enough and just recognize that he is unbelievable. In a year where the Rams were suppose to rule the NFC, it’s been their division rival who have steadily been a top-2 team.
Wilson and the Seahawks knocked off the undefeated 49ers on Monday Night Football with a little help from kicker Jason Myers. Wilson is fourth in passing yards, fifth in yards per attempt, first in total touchdowns, two interceptions, and first in passer rating for the year.
Incredible numbers.
The Case For:
While Jackson may have the newcomer narrative, Wilson has the underdog narrative. He has never won an MVP despite being one of the best quarterbacks in the league every year he’s been in it. His Seahawks are 8-2 and a Super Bowl contender as long as Wilson stays at this level of play. They play the 49ers at the end of the season, which could be a huge game as far as seeding in the playoffs go and for Wilson’s MVP resumé.
Wilson will need to sustain this play and go into the playoffs with a one or two seed, which seems quite possible at this point. He’s made rookie D.K. Metcalf into a blooming star and Tyler Lockett one of the best slot guys in the league. He’s also done all of this while being sacked 27 times, fifth most in the league, so it isn’t like his offensive line has gotten dramatically better.
The Case Against:
There’s not much to be said here.
Russell Wilson may not carry the load as much as McCaffrey does for the Seattle offense, but he’s as close as it gets. He’s attempted the seventh most passes in the NFL and all the quarterbacks ahead, besides Rodgers and Brady, have a much worse record.

He may not have the jaw-dropping potential that Jackson does, but again, he’s right up there with the most entertaining guys in the league. The only thing you can say is, besides the 49ers game, he doesn’t have a big win. He lost head to head games against Lamar Jackson and Drew Brees, which will count against him when it comes down to choose.
Every win the Seahawks have is by a touchdown or less besides one. That may not be sustainable unless Wilson keeps playing out of his mind.
MVP Moment:
Week 5 vs. Rams - 17/23, 268 yards passing, 4 passing touchdowns, 8 carries for 32 yards, win.
“Did he just do that?” Play:
Typical Wilson scramble drill 13-yard pass to Tyler Lockett in the back of the endzone.
CONCLUSION
The MVP race is anyone’s game at this point and even KC Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could get back into the discussion with the crazy numbers he’s putting up. Never rule out anyone or anything at this point.
Who do you think should be leading the MVP race right now?
