January 10 – Deadline to exchange arbitration filing figures if agreement has yet to be reached

The Royals will have to address the arbitration filings for Jorge Soler and Mike Montgomery this offseason. Cheslor Cuthbert, Jesse Hahn, and Jacob Barnes arbitration filings will also need to be addressed if they are retained on the roster. Jorge Soler arbitration cost estimates out at $11.2 million and Mike Montgomery estimates out at $2.9 million.

February 3-21 – Arbitration hearing period

In recent years, the Royals have avoided arbitration by signing deals with players before the arbitration hearing period. Expect them to do the same this offseason.

Mid-February – Spring Training commences

The Royals will invite several prospects to the MLB camp for spring training. I don’t believe any of the current big named prospects in the Royals farm system will break camp with the MLB squad. If any of the prospects shows they are ready, they will likely be brought up in June when there is less pressure to perform.

March 26 – Opening Day

The Royals will get to play a full season with a 26 man roster. Expect them to carry an extra pitcher as the 26th man. The first couple of months (March/April) of the season give the Royals a chance to be successful versus a weak schedule (White Sox, Tigers, Mariners, Blue Jays, Orioles, and Rays). There is a chance the Royals start out 2020 with a winning record.

Outlook

This offseason presents the Kansas City Royals with many changes and a great opportunity to set-up their roster for future success. New ownership, a new manager, continued development of breakout players currently on the roster, and the possibility of a bunch of new faces on the roster should make the Royals fanbase excited for the what the future holds.

The prospects are in the system and the Royals should have more competitive rosters coming in 2021 and beyond.
