Kansas State Football: Skylar Thompson puts on show in win over TCU
Kansas State football won their first conference game under first year head coach Chris Klieman with a 24-17 win over the TCU Horned Frogs. Skylar Thompson played his best game of the season in the victory.
What a game and what a win for the Kansas State Wildcats! K-State fought hard throughout and a crucial fourth down conversion late in the game helped pave the way for the Wildcats to win their first Big 12 game of the season.
Quarterback Skylar Thompson was great on Saturday, even if his numbers don’t exactly pop off the page. He completed just 11 passes, but threw for 172 yards and two of them also went for touchdowns. Thompson was also the leading rusher for K-State, carrying the football ten times for a total of 68 yards and he scored the game winning touchdown on a rushing touchdown. To sum up, he accounted for all three K-State touchdowns.
Thompson made plays when needed to, but the fourth down conversion is the play that stood out the most. What looked like a play that was about to go very badly for the Wildcats ended up with Thompson scrambling several yards for the first down and taking a shot from a defender in the process. That’s the kind of effort you like to see from your quarterback in a close game.

The defense played well, but they did surrender over 100 yards rushing to TCU quarterback Max Duggan (who had 115 yards rushing on the afternoon) along with a touchdown. When it counted, they came through and held off the Horned Frogs, who had plenty of time to make something happen after K-State scored late in the fourth quarter.
That being said, this game was, without a doubt, the Skylar Thompson show and the Little Apple was loving it!
With the win, Kansas State moves to 4-2 on the year and are now just two wins away from being bowl eligible in Chris Klieman’s first year as the K-State head coach. It hasn’t been perfect since Klieman took over, but for the most part, he’s done well in his first year at the helm. In fact, it’d be tough to ask much more of him.
Klieman has gotten the best out of Skylar Thompson too, which is impressive considering he wasn’t his guy and he didn’t recruit him. Thompson looks comfortable in this system and that’s great for fans to witness.
The winning probably won’t continue next weekend, as Kansas State football hosts the fifth ranked Oklahoma Sooners, whose offense is straight out of a video game. If the K-State defense allowed over 100 yards rushing to TCU’s quarterback, just imagine what Jalen Hurts could do to them. Or maybe don’t and enjoy the moment for the time being.
For now, however, let’s enjoy this victory. EMAW!
