There were 20 starting quarterbacks who were 26 years old or younger this past week, which signals a big changing of the guard at the position. KC Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads this next generation of great quarterbacks.

The 2019 NFL season is off to a turbulent start at the quarterback position. The careers of long-time great quarterbacks are beginning to falter and NFL fans are getting a taste of what’s to come. While these greats are in the twilight of their careers, a new generation of future greats is on the horizon.

Already this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is done after suffering an elbow injury in week two. While he’s expected to be ready again by next season, one has to wonder how this injury might affect his career as he turns 38 years old next spring. Not only is Big Ben down, but it appears as though the only team has he ever played for is crumbling as well, starting the season 0-3.

In that same week, the New Orleans Saints’ future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees suffered a thumb injury that will put him out for several weeks of the season. When he’ll return may not be as much of a question as to how he’ll return. Much like Tom Brady, Brees hasn’t shown much of a sign of slowing down, but at age 40, this injury could alter his return performance not only this season, but seasons to come.

Mahomes is not flash in the pan, he’s the next NFL great.

One of the bigger storylines of this last week was the benching of New York Giants’ two-time winning Super Bowl quarterback Eli Manning, in favor of the rookie Daniel Jones.

Manning’s performance has looked poor for some years now and with Jones overcoming an 18-point deficit to win on Sunday, it only puts an exclamation point on that. It’s not crazy to speculate that Manning may never make a start in the NFL ever again if things continue to go well with Jones.

With guys like Mason Rudolph and Daniel Jones starting in place of Roethlisberger and Manning, respectively, they now look to be the new faces of their franchises. Even though Rudolph was selected in the third round of the 2018 draft, the Steelers did have a first-round grade on him. The number six overall selection of Jones in this year’s draft seemed crazy at first, but that now looks to be the right move, if only after one game.

One interesting game on Sunday was more than just two potential AFC playoff teams battling it out. This was a game of an aged veteran in the Chargers’ Philip Rivers versus a young star in the Texans’ Deshaun Watson. In a 27-20 victory, Watson (351 yards, three touchdowns) out-dueled Rivers (318 yards, two touchdowns) in a clash of old versus new.

More from KC Kingdom

There are plenty of other names that football fans are becoming familiar with like Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, and Mitchell Trubisky. NFL history has countless stories of great players that have come and gone and the next generation isn’t lacking those players or their stories that are being written. There’s a lot of great football ahead because of this wave of new quarterbacks.

And here’s the best part for the Kansas City Chiefs and for Chiefs Kingdom – Patrick Mahomes leads all the up-and-coming young quarterbacks by a large margin. It seems like hardly a week goes by where Mahomes isn’t breaking or matching a record of any number of Hall of Fame quarterbacks. He’s competing and playing like the greatest of all quarterbacks and yet he’s only 24 years old.

Mahomes is again on track to throw for over 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards. It’s hard to believe that Mahomes looks even better than his 2018 MVP campaign, but incredibly, he does. It seems like the bigger the challenge placed in front of him, the better he becomes to overcome that challenge.

It’s an exciting time to be an NFL football fan in general, but especially to be a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs fans have waited decades to get an elite franchise quarterback and that time has finally come. Mahomes is not flash in the pan, he’s the next NFL great.

What sets Mahomes apart from the greats of yesteryear is how quickly he’s eclipsing their records. What separates him from this generation of future greats is that he doesn’t just flash, but flashes consistently and in the biggest moments. In only his second year as a starter, it’s easy to see that this is Mahomes’ team and quite frankly, his league.
