KC Chiefs: Five takeaways from preseason week 4 vs Packers
By Shade Piper
4. Mark Fields picked a bad week to have a bad week
To say Mark Fields had a rough night would probably be an understatement. He was a walking penalty in this one and just as Packers quarterback Manny Wilkins hurdled him in the fourth quarter, Herb Miller and Rashad Fenton have hurdled him in the rookie cornerback pecking order.
Throughout the offseason, Fenton has been quiet and Fields had been emerging as the top rookie cornerback. That is until the preseason games arrived and Miller broke out with an interception and a forced fumble. In the fourth preseason game, Fields may have plummeted to third in the rookie cornerback rankings.
Fields racked up back to back red zone penalties on the Packers third drive and followed that up with a pass interference in the endzone with just seconds left in the half to set the Packers up for a touchdown going into half time.
Late in the game, he was again called for a penalty for lining up in the neutral zone, which didn’t end up mattering because the Chiefs gave up a touchdown anyways. And his bad night couldn’t stop there, as mentioned above his night ended by whiffing on a tackle as Wilkins hurdled him in the red zone.
Not a great night for Fields. Fortunately for him, with the lack of depth at the cornerback position in Kansas City, he still may find himself on the roster week one.
