Four out of five American League Central teams went with a high school player with their first pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, but all five teams landed a potential franchise-altering player in the first round.

Who will end up being the best between Witt, Vaughn, Greene, Cavaco and Espino? For Kansas City’s sake, let’s hope it’s Witt, but those five players will be tied to each other for the duration of their careers.

It seems likely that Vaughn will reach the Majors first of that group. Of the high schoolers, it will be interesting to see which one gets called up first, and which makes an impact first.

Then there’s the other guys, the non-first round picks. Minnesota seems like it stuck the landing in selecting the slugging Matt Wallner, but will his power transition from Conference USA to the American League Central?

For the Indians, will the organization rue sticking with high school players over college players so much in the early rounds of the draft? It’s going to take some time for those young guys to develop.

Questions abound for every team in the Central, from the Twins sitting at the top to the Royals looking at another dismal campaign. The fun thing about looking back at the draft just weeks later is that, despite what the odds say, hope still springs eternal.

As a fan, I’m excited to see Witt in a couple of years. But I’m also excited to watch these fantastic players selected by other intra-divisional organizations when they visit Kauffman Stadium.

I just hope Witt’s the best of the bunch.
