Nebraska football won’t kick off the regular season for awhile, but it’s never too early to start predicting what the season could have in store. Athlon Sports published their predictions and has the Huskers winning the Big Ten West.

Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports published a Big Ten Football prediction piece on Wednesday, which included who he thought would win both sides of the Big Ten. His predicted winner of the Big Ten West is our very own Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Here is what Lassan had to say about why he picked the Huskers to reign supreme in the West for the first time ever (they were Big Ten Legends champs in 2012 before it was renamed West),

"Coach Scott Frost’s team showed marked improvement over the second half of last season and should carry that momentum into 2019. Quarterback Adrian Martinez is already among the Big Ten’s best and some improvement is expected on a defense that gave up 31.3 points a game last fall."

These are both tremendous points and are why Husker fans feel pretty confident heading into the 2019 campaign. Lassan also notes that Nebraska has a more favorable schedule than that of Iowa and Wisconsin, which definitely wasn’t the case last year.

Lassan has the Huskers finishing the year at 9-4 with a 6-3 conference record and finishing ahead of Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois, in that order. He has Michigan winning the Big Ten East and handling the Cornhuskers in the Big Ten Championship Game.

While non-Nebraska fans will see this prediction and roll their eyes, Nebraska fans absolutely expect the team to contend in the Big Ten West in 2019. Last year was rough for the program, but 2019 is a fresh start and Scott Frost and his team were clicking down the stretch last year, which made all of us feel better about what the future has in store for the Cornhuskers.

Adrian Martinez returns for his second season as the starting quarterback in Lincoln while the program also added key wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who will make an immediate impact. Throw in the fact that the defense should be much better and we’ll be seeing a much better product (and hopefully more disciplined group) on the field this year.

While it’s tough to go from just four wins to winning their side of the conference, Nebraska is going to take massive strides this year and very well could compete for a conference championship in 2019.

What do you think, Husker fans? Is a Big Ten West title a realistic goal for the Nebraska Cornhuskers this year?
