OAKLAND RAIDERS

The Raiders had nine draft picks overall and three in the first round – three in the first round! Thankfully, they didn’t prove to be too dangerous with those first three picks. Picking Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell with the fourth overall pick was a bit of a head-scratcher, especially since he was more likely a late first-round or early second-round pick.

Their next two picks, running back Joshua Jacobs at 24 and safety Johnathan Abram at 27, while talented players, might also seem like a bit of an overreach like Ferrell was. They did go on to select a decent cornerback in Trayvon Mullen with the 40th overall pick, which helps their less-than-talented secondary. While picking Clemson wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in round five might be their best bargain pick, it still may not be their best pick.

A player that might just be the most intriguing pick is LSU tight end, Foster Moreau. In a deeper tight end draft class, Moreau was one of the names that seemed to be a little higher on the list. Had he fallen to a place where the Chiefs could have picked him, he would have added immediate value to a thin Chiefs’ tight end group.

With the offseason exit of Jared Cook, the Raiders didn’t really have a tight end to speak of. Outside of Cook for the last few seasons, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr hasn’t had a consistent tight end to throw to since coming into the league five years ago. Throwing to Moreau might prove to be the consistent weapon that he needs.

After adding wide receivers Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams in the offseason, the addition of a solid tight end like Moreau could require additional defensive game planning.

With that in mind, it makes picking that running back in the first round a little more interesting. With nine overall picks and three first-rounders, Moreau falling to them in the fourth round may very well have been their best choice.
