The 2019 NFL Draft has concluded and the Kansas City Chiefs added six new players to their roster. One of them was Darwin Thompson, a running back out of Utah State.

A lot can change in a year for anyone, but Kansas City Chiefs fans know this feeling all too well. This time last year, the offense didn’t need to be addressed at all. The quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, and offensive line were basically set.

Fast forward to present day and that wasn’t the case heading into the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Chiefs probably wouldn’t have even considered grabbing a running back this year, but some unfortunate circumstances occurred in November. The organization did what they felt was best when they released Kareem Hunt in November.

Damien Williams then stepped up and earned a two-year extension with the team and will be the starting option for at least the 2019 season. Carlos Hyde was signed this offseason and Darryl Williams is also still on the roster, giving the Chiefs a solid trio at running back.

Even still, they drafted Darwin Thompson with the 214th overall pick (the final pick in the sixth round) and this guy has the potential to be a big time star for the Chiefs.

Thompson, who only played at Utah State for one season, rushed for 1,044 yards and 14 touchdowns on 153 carries. What likely made him appealing to Andy Reid and Brett Veach was his ability to catch the ball as well, hauling in 23 receptions for 351 yards and two receiving touchdowns in 2018.

Yes, Thompson played in the Mountain West Conference so the level of competition wasn’t that of what it is in a Power-5 conference, but make no mistake… He could be the real deal at running back.

Thompson had five games where he rushed for 100 yards or more last season, with his best game coming against San Jose State. In that match-up, Thompson carried the ball 15 times for 140 yards and one touchdown while also grabbing four catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Talk about a playmaker!

Damien Williams is still the starter and probably will hold onto that job for most of the season, but Darwin Thompson is going to make his presence known and he’ll soon become a massive weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs on offense.
