Kansas City Chiefs: Predicting who will be chosen in round two
By Chris Clark
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft is in the books. With the Kansas City Chiefs not having a first round pick, fans didn’t have much to get excited about. With a few picks on day two, which names could land on the Chiefs’ roster?
The Kansas City Chiefs originally held the 29th overall pick for this year’s draft. That all changed earlier this week when general manager Brett Veach made a splash trade in acquiring defensive end Frank Clark from Seattle. The Seahawks received the Chiefs’ 2019 first-round and 2020 second-round picks and the Chiefs got an elite caliber edge defender in return.
Now that Kansas City no longer has a first round pick, they’ll be selecting 61st and 63rd in the second round. Brett Veach has shown that he can make aggressive moves so it wouldn’t be surprising if those picks changed on day two. It also wouldn’t be surprising if the Chiefs stayed patient and landed a couple of needed players late in round two.
Thankfully, not many names were called on day one that were legitimately associated with the Chiefs leading up to the draft. With needs in the secondary, safety Darnell Savage and cornerback Deandre Baker may have been the only names called that interested Kansas City. Other names like center Garrett Bradbury and defensive lineman Jerry Tillery could have been late first-round considerations as well.

Without having too many associated names pulled off the board, this could really make things more interesting for Chiefs Kingdom on day two. With the defensive additions of Tyrann Mathieu, Frank Clark, Alex Okafor, and Bashaud Breeland this offseason, Brett Veach seems to have lessened the pressure to improve the defense through this year’s draft. Those late second round picks could now be used for either side of the ball.
For the defense, one name that Chiefs fans should keep on their radar is safety, Nasir Adderley. The 6’0″, 205 pound Adderley would hopefully make pairing him with the Honey Badger one of the league’s more revered safety tandems. With Adderley’s experience at both safety and cornerback, the Chiefs could potentially alleviate some of the help needed at cornerback spot in the process.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs may look to add a tight end or a wide receiver. If tight end Jace Sternberger is still available late in the second, he would add a solid talent behind Travis Kelce and give Patrick Mahomes another weapon to throw to. The Texas A&M product is one of the more regarded players at the position in a deeper tight end draft class.
Other names to keep in mind if they make it that far would be cornerbacks Greedy Williams or Byron Murphy, safety Juan Thornhill, or wide receivers A.J. Brown or Hakeem Butler. Any of these names would appear to be a steal late on day two and would add immediate value to the Chiefs’ roster. Hopefully, at least a few of the names mentioned above will still be available for the Chiefs to choose from.
Even without a first-round pick, the Chiefs don’t seem to have missed out on much. Day two could tell a different story but at this point, there’s still the potential to land a talented player at a needed position. Chiefs Kingdom, get ready for an exciting second round of the 2019 NFL Draft!
