Clemson corner Trayvon Mullen has been a name on the Kansas City Chiefs draft radar and could be a prospect the Chiefs want to bring in. Andrew Boardwine of Rubbing the Rock helps provide some insight into the Clemson cornerback
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking into cornerbacks as if they were about to be extinct. Almost daily, the Chiefs have had a different corner in town for a visit.
One name that could interest the Chiefs in the 2019 NFL Draft is Clemson Tigers junior Trayvon Mullen. He’s a long-time contributor to a Clemson defense that helped the program win two National Championships and make it to three College Football Playoff appearances during his career with the Tigers.
Andrew Boardwine with rubbingtherock.com, FanSided’s Clemson website, helps provide some quick insight into the cornerback that could soon be a member of the Chiefs Kingdom.

Was Trayvon Mullen’s NFL declaration expected?
Yes, he was easily Clemson’s best lockdown corner for the past couple of seasons. He had a great year during his junior year and felt it was time to make that leap. He could’ve come back and potentially worked himself up into the first round, but I think Mullen was content with being a 2-3 round pick and beginning his NFL career.
Best description of Mullen play the past two seasons?
He reminded me a lot of another former Clemson football player- Mackensie Alexander. Mullen was a lockdown corner who made very few mistakes.
Despite winning the National Championship, Clemson’s secondary actually had some problems all season, but Mullen was the consistent option at that boundary spot that proved to be a difference for the Tigers.
What does Mullen do best?
He’s got really good lateral quickness and does a great job in coverage. He developed a reputation as a lethal cornerback and that made opposing quarterbacks stay away from targeting him.
Conversely, what does Mullen most need to improve?
He doesn’t have many interceptions, but that’s because he was rarely ever targeted. The one area that I think Mullen needs to improve is in his build and coverage in complex routes. He does a really good job guarding the fade, but can sometimes be left behind or a step slower when guarding the complex routes that you’re going to see at the NFL level.
What is, in general, the most impressive aspect about Trayvon Mullen?
His coverage ability and reputation, despite the fact that he’s much more quiet in his approach than your average defensive back.
Did Mullen play primarily man coverage or zone coverage at Clemson?
Clemson shows multiple looks, but Mullen played a lot of man-coverage in press situations.
What kind of person is Mullen on and off the field?
I’ll answer all three of those by saying that he’s a guy that’s best described as “quiet confidence.” You can tell that Mullen is confident in his ability, but he’s not a guy that’s going to talk a lot about it. He developed into a leader at Clemson over his three years, but isn’t the type of personality that’s going to be loud like a lot of other defensive backs.
Whomever selects Mullen, what type of player are they bringing into their organization?
Mullen is the perfect guy for an organization because he’s going to stay out of trouble, he’s not going to have an attitude and he’s going to put in the work to become a better player.
