Kansas City Chiefs: Five scenarios for first round of 2019 NFL Draft
By Kole Berrey
Scenario 5: The Blockbuster
The Chiefs have cap space, draft capital, and a need on defense. So why not swing for the fences?
It is hard to gauge who is available and what their value is in the NFL. Studs like Khalil Mack and Antonio Brown have been moved in the last year, and the return on either guys was on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Chiefs have plenty to work with in terms of compensation, and that could work well for them here.

Sometimes stars don’t work out in their current environment, for varying reasons. Xavier Rhodes of the Minnesota Vikings has been publicly critical of his coaches, and Jalen Ramsey has long been rumored for the trading block. If those two players are indeed available, pick 29 may be enough to pry them away. The secondary could use an upgrade in Kansas City, and these two players offer that and more.
If the Chiefs want pass rush, they could choose to pick up a franchise tagged player in a trade. The 49ers did the same thing when they pick up Dee Ford in an offseason trade earlier on in the year.
Frank Clark and Jadeveon Clowney are both tagged and looking for long-term deals. Veach could look to pair one of them with Chris Jones and worry about the secondary and depth concerns with their remaining picks. Either guy would give the Chiefs a boost on defense, and could prove more natural fits in a 4-3 scheme than Dee Ford and Justin Houston were.
If a trade like this were to happen, expect the Chiefs to try to hold a tight grip on their first round choice. Pointing to the Dee Ford and Marcus Peters trades as only involving second round and on picks, they could look to deal one of their seconds and still make a selection in round one.
If a trade does occur, expect the first round choice to compliment that. This means if the Chiefs trade for Ramsey or another corner, they will pick a pass rusher in round one. If they were to trade for a guy like Clowney, however, expect them to address the secondary in round one.
Regardless of what Veach ends up doing in the draft, the Chiefs definitely have options.
