The KC Chiefs have the 29th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In a recent mock draft by CBS Sports, they have the Chiefs trading up to the 25th overall pick.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports released his most recent mock draft and had the Kansas City Chiefs trading up four spots. The pick? Jaylon Ferguson, an edge rusher, out of Louisiana Tech.

Here was Benjamin’s reasoning for both the trade and the selection,

"Chiefs get No. 25, 127 from Eagles for No. 29, 92Desperate for a pass rush following the departures of both Dee Ford and Justin Houston, Andy Reid makes a deal with his old friends to secure the man K.C. has been all over in the pre-draft process."

This would be a bit of a shocking move for the fans. Yes, the Chiefs need an edge rusher after trading Dee Ford and releasing Justin Houston, but this seems like a year where the franchise would actually opt to trade DOWN rather than up.

Jaylon Ferguson, despite coming from a non-Power 5 school, is a talented player. He was the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and when looking at his stats, it’s not crazy to see why.

  • Tackles: 187 (112 solo) (67.5 for loss)
  • Sacks: 45
  • Forced Fumbles: 7
  • Passes Defensed: 6
  • Recovered Fumbles: 3

As a senior, Ferguson tallied 65 tackles (26 for loss), 17.5 sacks, three defended passes, two forced fumbles, and one recovered fumble. Obviously the level of competition in Conference USA play isn’t as difficult as what Power-5 players face on a weekly basis, but the numbers Ferguson put up are impressive no matter how you spin it.

While Ferguson is listed as an edge rusher, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com notes that he could end up being targeted as more of a defensive end. The Chiefs need help in the trenches on defense and with Ferguson’s tackling efficiency and ability to get after the quarterback, he’d be a great selection for the team.

Now, is it worth trading up to get him? That’s what Chiefs fans would be debating about for awhile. After addressing the secondary in free agency, defensive line is where the Chiefs need to fixate on in the draft, but there are plenty of talented prospects and it might not be worth trading up to move up four spots.

What would your reaction be if the KC Chiefs ended up making this move? Would you be okay with them trading up and drafting Jaylon Ferguson or do you hope they’ll stay put at pick 29?
