The KC Chiefs have eight total selections in the 2019 NFL Draft. CBS Sports did a seven-round mock draft for the entire league and had the Chiefs focusing heavily on defense.

It shouldn’t surprise Kansas City Chiefs fans that the team will be looking to mostly fixate on defense in the 2019 NFL Draft. After all, we saw how poorly the defense performed when it mattered most and it cost the team a trip to the Super Bowl.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports conducted a seven-round mock for the entire league and he had the Chiefs going with defensive players with six out of eight of their total picks. Here’s who he had the Chiefs selecting:

  • Round 1: Pick 29Zach Allen, EDGE/Defensive Line (Boston College) – 15 tackles for loss and six and a half sacks in 2018
  • Round 2: Pick 29Erik McCoy, Center (Texas A&M)
  • Round 2: Pick 31Rock Ya-Sin, Cornerback (Temple) –  47 tackles, 12 defended passes in 2018
  • Round 3: Pick 28L.J. Collier, EDGE (TCU) – 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks in 2018
  • Round 5: Pick 29Te’Von Coney, Linebacker (Notre Dame) – 123 total tackles in 2018
  • Round 6: Pick 28Mark Fields, Cornerback (Clemson)
  • Round 6: Pick 41Malik Reed, EDGE (Nevada) – 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks in 2018
  • Round 7: Pick 2Clayton Thorson, Quarterback (Northwestern) – 3,183 yards, 17 passing touchdowns (nine rushing), 15 interceptions in 2018

All right, let’s dive into these selections!

For starters, it’s hard not to notice that Trapasso had the Chiefs really focusing on defense. He had them drafting six defensive players and three of those guys are edge rushers. After trading Dee Ford and releasing Justin Houston, it’s not difficult to see why someone would want to give KC as much pass rush help as possible.

He also had the team adding two cornerbacks and one linebacker. Cornerback isn’t as big of a need now with Bashaud Breeland in a Chiefs uniform, but I’m fine with adding depth at the position.

Offensively, Trapasso didn’t have the KC Chiefs going the route that I’d have them go on that side of the ball. They need to draft a tight end and he ignored that position. He did, however, have KC drafting a center in the second round.

While I don’t disagree with adding a center via the draft, round two might be a bit early to address the center position. Austin Reiter is a solid option and is on the cheap.

The most shocking move, even if it was their final pick in the draft, was selecting a quarterback. Patrick Mahomes needs a backup, but right now Chad Henne or EJ Manuel provide that for the team. Even Chase Litton could step into that role if need be. I would not waste a pick on a backup quarterback, at least not this year.
