SPORTING KC PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2019 – GERSO FERNANDES

Gerso Fernandes is another fiery offensive player with a potentially expiring contract this season, depending on whether SKC picks up the one-year club option or not.

More from KC Kingdom

Fernandes has been pleasantly surprising in the start of the 2019 season. In 2017, the midfielder-forward flex player led the team with eight goals, but then saw his playing time decrease in the 2018 season.

This year, Fernandes seems ready to replicate 2017’s success, playing with an athleticism, speed, and physicality that ensures his attacking presence can’t be overlooked throughout the match.

Though his technicality isn’t perfect, Fernandes has an ability to put himself in the right place at the right time. He has an uncanny ability to slink behind a defense and create opportunities for himself out of nothing.

The healthy competition between Fernandes and Salloi will be an exciting one to watch this season. Despite which one earns the starting striker position, they will both change Sporting’s offense through their individual attacking contributions.

Conclusion

So far, Sporting Kansas City has shown a new side of themselves, breaking out of their typical defense-over-offense style and prioritizing speed and possession. The passing we’ve seen thus far has been gorgeously clean, and their explosive offensive is fun to watch.

With a condensed season and deep roster, it is likely that Vermes will rotate his players and that most (if not all) of the players will not be starting all 34 MLS games. Both starters and reserves will get their opportunities to shine, and these seven players have shown that they’ll be making notable impressions on the club this season.
