Other Moves

The big moves have all been discussed, but there are still some other smaller moves that can be made to further cut into the Chiefs’ cap hit and help shore up the roster. Here are the moves I decided to make on my Version Two Roster:

Reggie Ragland is also a release option that’s been suggested a lot since he more than likely can only play middle linebacker in the 4-3 scheme and Anthony Hitchens will have that starting spot on lock. Unfortunately, cutting Ragland only saves about $1.2 million this season, so I decided to keep him. That’s one less position to worry about filling and, although his career has been mostly an underachievement, he has shown enough upside at times that keeping him is a comfortable move.

Anthony Sherman is another fan favorite who was tough not to re-sign, but he made $2 million last season, according to Over the Cap, and could be looking for a raise this year. This isn’t a real hefty contract, but every dollar counts and with Aaron Ripkowski already signed to a $720,000 contract, the Chiefs will go with the younger, cheaper replacement for Sherman.

The Chiefs also recently signed Sammie Coates an $805,000 contract. In Version One of my roster predictions, he made the final 53-man roster, but in Version Two, I am going with Byron Pringle making the roster, saving the Chiefs $300,000. Pringle looked impressive last preseason and an unfortunate hamstring injury sent him to injured reserve just before the start of the season. If he builds off of his last preseason, he could make the roster this year.

After all of these moves that leaves the Chiefs with 52 players (this is including my assumed ten rookies that will make the roster) and $13.3 million in cap space. This leaves them with a little more room to fill their last roster spot than what they had in my Version One Roster.

Let’s see what the Final Roster looks like.
