Kansas City Chiefs: Re-Drafting biggest misses of past decade
By Cullen Jekel
There’s a reason a look back at these drafts covered three different general managers: drafting is hard.
It’s why Pioli, John Dorsey, and Veach make the big bucks. While it’s easy for me to sit back and review these guys’ work, these gentlemen have to make the moves with an eye on the prospective rather than the retrospective.

And yet, the Chiefs are the favorite to win next year’s Super Bowl because of all of the hits and misses since 2009. What wasn’t stated in the previous slides is that each pick has a butterfly effect, and it’s not that hard to imagine that if the Chiefs hit on every pick in 2009, then the organization could be in a very different place right now, for better or worse.
If the Chiefs had drafted Gronkowski or Graham in 2010, where would Travis Kelce be today?
If the Chiefs had drafted Russell Wilson over Donald Stephenson, where might we find Patrick Mahomes? Would Wilson have had the same type of success in Kansas City that he’s had in Seattle?
The answers to these questions are all unknown.
But let this be known: I’m happy with the current state of the Chiefs franchise. I’d rather watch Mahomes on any given Sunday than any other quarterback in the league. If that means missing out on the likes of Wilson, Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, and David Johnson, so be it.
The Chiefs got right the tenth overall pick in 2017. That really makes up for all the misses.
