KC Chiefs: Should Chiefs draft a wide receiver in 2019 NFL Draft?
Wide receiver isn’t a position of need for the KC Chiefs this offseason, but could the Chiefs still decide to add one in the 2019 NFL Draft?
It wasn’t long ago when the Kansas City Chiefs were always struggling to find a number one wide receiver. In 2014, they went the entire season without a wideout hauling in a touchdown. They ended up giving Jeremy Maclin a five-year contract to come in and be the number one guy in KC.
Yeah, that lasted two years before Maclin was infamously cut from the Chiefs. The good news out of that, however, is that it paved the way for Tyreek Hill to become the receiver he is. The Chiefs don’t need a number one wideout because they have Hill.
They also don’t need a second option due to having Sammy Watkins and his deal being so massive. If the Chiefs did decide to draft a receiver, it’d be as a fourth or fifth stringer at best because Demarcus Robinson has shown he can be a reliable third receiver.

As of now, the Kansas City Chiefs have nine total receivers on their roster. There’s the three I mentioned above as well as Kelvin Benjamin, Sammie Coates, Chris Conley, Gehrig Dieter, Davon Grayson, and Marcus Kemp.
Conley likely won’t be back with the team next season and Benjamin isn’t a sure thing either. Dieter showed promise near the end of the 2018 season and could be someone the Chiefs use as a fourth string option. Coates and Grayson were just signed a few weeks ago and Kemp has mostly been utilized as a special teams guy.
Truth be told – The Chiefs don’t NEED to draft a wide receiver. They have plenty of options at the position. Sometimes it’s nice to add depth though, especially at an important position like wideout. Watkins is injured frequently (or at least he was during his inaugural season as a Chief), which could be another decent reason for adding a receiver.
If the Chiefs decided to draft a receiver, hopefully it wouldn’t come until Day 3. They need to draft heavily on defense and if they’re going to add offensive talent, it should be in the form of a tight end and/or a running back. Wide receiver is not high up on the list and that’s a good thing for the Chiefs for sure.
What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Would you want the team to draft a wide receiver this year?
