KC Chiefs: Pro Football Focus has Chiefs trading up for Greedy Williams
By Shade Piper
The KC Chiefs hold the 29th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Pro Football Focus recently did a mock draft in which the Chiefs traded up from that spot to nab LSU cornerback Greedy Williams.
Now that the season is over, the next big thing Kansas City Chiefs fans have to look forward to is the NFL Draft. Although it doesn’t happen until April 25th, NFL Experts are already flooding the internet with mock drafts that have fans already anxiously counting down the days until the draft.
The Chiefs had a great 2018 season, but it fell just short of a Super Bowl appearance with an overtime loss to the eventual World Champion New England Patriots. In the overtime period, the Chiefs were unable to keep the Patriots out of the end zone and because of this the Chiefs lost without their MVP quarterback even touching the ball in overtime.
This overtime period really highlighted the issues that were the story of the Chiefs season. The high-powered offense was not only exciting to watch, but often times absolutely necessary to win games because of the defensive struggles. Many KC Chiefs fans were calling for the firing of Bob Sutton and a defensive dominated draft class. They got their first wish, as Sutton was fired and replaced by Steve Spagnuolo.
Now all they have to look forward to is the draft.
The Chiefs have been linked to cornerbacks with their first round pick, the 29th overall pick, in most mock drafts so far. In a recent mock on Pro Football Focus, Senior Analyst Mike Renner had the Chiefs doing something a little more exciting than in most other mock drafts that have been released; in Renner’s mock draft he had the Chiefs trading up nine slots to draft cornerback Greedy Williams with the 20th overall pick via the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Andraez “Greedy” Williams has been pretty much a consensus number one overall cornerback prospect, so the potential of the Chiefs trading up and snagging him is very exciting. Williams was Mel Kiper’s number nine overall prospect on his most recent NFL Draft Big Board and his number one overall cornerback in his positional rankings.
In his Mock draft, however, Kiper had him going number four overall to division rival Oakland Raiders. This makes me question his availability at pick number 20. Another NFL Draft expert, Matt Miller, had Williams as his first cornerback off the board as well – guess where he had him being drafted overall – at the 20th pick.
So there is some variability on where exactly he will be selected, but at least a couple of experts believe he will be available until pick 20. If it is getting up close to the 20s and Williams hasn’t been selected the Chiefs would for sure be wise to make a move to try to draft him.
What it would take to move up to the 20th slot?

The Packers traded their first, third, and sixth round selections to move up nine spots in the first round of last season’s draft (the Packers also received an additional seventh round selection in the trade). Basically what this trade amounts to is giving up a third round selection and moving back a few spots in the sixth/seventh round to move up and get a guy you really want in the first round.
For Greedy Williams, it is probably worth it if this is what it takes. He is a big, physical corner with good ball skills and is the cornerback who Kiper calls “the best lockdown corner” of this draft class. The Chiefs obviously have a need in the secondary and this could potentially be a big improvement to the cornerback position in KC.
The case against moving up to select Williams
Deandre Baker and Byron Murphy are right on Williams’ heals as the second and third best cornerback options and are both projected to go in the first round as well. Renner actually had Baker and Murphy going before Williams in his mock draft that had the Chiefs trading up for the LSU corner.
This tells me maybe Greedy Williams as the draft’s best cornerback isn’t as consensus as we thought. If it gets to pick 20 and all three of those corners are still available, it’s probably pretty likely that one of them will be available at pick 29.
It might not be as smart to trade up for Williams then, unless the Chiefs are just absolutely set on getting him. If two of the three of them are gone by pick 20, I definitely think Clark Hunt, Brett Veach, Andy Reid, and Steve Spangnuolo would be wise to pull the trigger and trade up to get their cornerback of the future.
