Kansas City Chiefs: Byron Murphy linked to Chiefs in recent mock draft
The Kansas City Chiefs need help in their secondary and that’s where the latest mock draft released by CBS Sports has them going in the first round. The pick is cornerback Byron Murphy out of Washington.
We all watched the Kansas City Chiefs defense a lot this season and time and time again, it was clear to see that opposing offenses could have their way with them. The Patriots did just that in the AFC Championship Game and it cost the Chiefs a trip to the Super Bowl.
This offseason is the Chiefs’ best shot to fix those defensive woes and they have to do so in both free agency and the draft.
Just about every mock draft I’ve looked at so far has had the Chiefs taking either a cornerback or a safety in the first round. If not one of those positions, it’s along the defensive line or an inside linebacker to help stop the run.

In Chris Trapasso’s mock draft over at CBS Sports, he had the Chiefs going with Washington cornerback Byron Murphy with the 29th overall selection. Here’s what Trapasso had to say about his choice,
"The Chiefs defense led to their demise in the AFC title game, and it was a big issue all season. Murphy is a small corner but has elite twitchiness and is a hard-nosed run-stopper."
Wait, a cornerback who is a great run stopper? Sign me up for that!
Murphy was a redshirt sophomore this past season, so he is indeed eligible for the draft. He totaled 58 tackles (four for loss), 13 passes defended, and four interceptions (one taken back the other way) in the 2018 season for the Huskies.
Murphy really appears to be a special player and one that if the Chiefs can get late in the first round, fans would be elated about. He’s 5’11” and 182 pounds, so he’s on the smaller side, but the upside is there for sure.
The Chiefs definitely have some uncertainty at the cornerback position, as Kendall Fuller is their number one option, but after that it’s pretty wide open. Charvarius Ward showed some juice as a rookie, but he’s not a permanent starter. Orlando Scandrick wasn’t the answer either. The Chiefs need new blood in at cornerback and Murphy would be a solid choice to select in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs need to go after defense a lot in this draft and Byron Murphy would be an excellent pick for them in the first round. What do you think, Chiefs fans? Would you be okay with Murphy joining the Chiefs secondary?
