Nebraska Basketball: Time to move on from Tim Miles
Nebraska basketball lost a home game to Ohio State on Saturday and it’s time for the program to move on from head coach Tim Miles.
Nebraska basketball hired Tim Miles to take over their program in 2012 and it hasn’t been much to write home about. The Cornhuskers have made the tournament once, back in the 2013-2014 season, and at the time, many fans hoped that’d be the first of many March Madness appearances.
Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.
Heading into this season, many Husker fans had high hopes for their hoops program to win a tournament game for the first time ever. They had as much talent as they’ve had maybe ever and they looked good to start the year, playing against some decent non-conference opponents.

The Big Ten was going to be where the Cornhuskers had to make their mark and outside of a road win at Indiana, they’ve failed to do so. While the players are the ones on the court, at some point these losses have to be put on the coaching staff.
Nebraska, who didn’t have Isaac Copeland on Saturday and won’t have him for the duration of the season, looked sluggish at best against Ohio State. There were several times where the Buckeyes would miss a shot and no Huskers would even be in the vicinity for the rebound. It looked like there wasn’t much effort to be had and that should fall on Tim Miles.
Nebraska has now lost three straight games, but the worst was highlighted by a loss to Rutgers. A team like Nebraska should not be losing to a team like Rutgers. That shouldn’t happen.
As of now, Miles posts a record of 110-104 throughout his six and a half years at the helm. The Huskers made the tournament once, in the 2013-2014 season, and lost to Baylor in the first round. Since then, it’s been mostly disappointment for Miles and the Cornhuskers and it’s time for the program to go in another direction.
I’m not usually the type to call for a coach’s firing, but it’s clear that Miles has taken Nebraska hoops as far as he can. With the amount of talent the team has this year, there’s no reason they should be 3-6 in the Big Ten and hanging by a thread when it comes to tournament aspirations.
While it might be too late to save the team this year, Nebraska needs to make a change at head coach moving forward. Tim Miles is a nice guy, but at the end of the day, the goal is to make the tournament and if Miles fails to do so this season, he’ll have missed out in five straight seasons.
Nebraska basketball can, and needs to, do better.
