Kansas City Chiefs part ways with defensive coordinator Bob Sutton
All season long, Kansas City Chiefs fans were clamoring for the team to part ways with defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. Well, on Tuesday afternoon, fans got their wish. Sutton is no more in Kansas City.
The Kansas City Chiefs apparently saw enough after their loss in the AFC Championship Game, as defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was relieved of his duties on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came via the Chiefs on Twitter.
This was a move that needed to be made for many reasons. The main one being that the Chiefs defense had been getting worse each year under Sutton. This past season saw them sitting at or near the bottom in nearly every defensive category.
Sutton joined the Chiefs staff in 2013 when Andy Reid was brought to Kansas City as the next head coach. The defense was pretty good the first few years of Sutton’s tenure, but these past two years they dropped off quite a bit.

The biggest eyesore for the defense recently has been their inability to stop the run. They were destroyed on the ground this past Sunday, allowing over 170 rushing yards to the Patriots.
While the run defense has been awful, the secondary wasn’t worth writing home about either. The Chiefs had the Patriots in three straight third and long situations and allowed them to convert on every single one of them. They’d later go on to win the game on a rushing touchdown in overtime because the defense couldn’t get a stop.
This move should have been made last year, but we’ve seen Reid be loyal to his guys and Sutton was one of his guys. Relieving Bob Sutton of his duties shows that Reid knows he has a contending team and if they can get a decent defense out there, this team could be a contender every single year.
While it’s never fun to know someone lost their job, the Kansas City Chiefs had to make this move. The defense was only getting worse under Sutton and they weren’t going to improve under him. If the Chiefs want to build on their 2018 campaign, a new defensive coordinator has to be brought in.
There’s talent on the defensive side of the ball, so the new coordinator will make sure the defense plays to each guy’s strengths. Sutton had a decent run early on in his Chiefs career, but this is the right move for sure.
