The playoffs have not been kind to Kansas City Chiefs fans for a long time and even though some fans think Patrick Mahomes is the difference this time around, fans have a reason to be anxious.

Say what you want about the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 12-4 record during the 2018 regular season. Say what you want about the third straight AFC West title or clinching the top seed in the AFC playoffs. All of those things are great, but when it comes to the playoffs, Chiefs fans have every right to be anxious this time of year.

As I alluded to in the opening paragraph, the playoffs haven’t been kind to the Chiefs organization or to the fan base. Not only have the Chiefs failed to win a home playoff game since the 1993 season, but whenever they’ve lost a postseason match-up, it’s always come in laughable, miserable, embarrassing fashion.

If we’re only looking at the Arrowhead playoff games, we have the three missed kicks game in 1995, the 1997 loss to Denver, the no punt game in 2003, the blowout loss in 2010, losing to the Steelers who failed to score a touchdown in 2016, and last but not least, the 21-3 implosion just a year ago.

Aside from the 2010 debacle, the Chiefs had opportunities to win all of those games. Winning in 1995, 1997, 2003, and 2016 would have put the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. They would have hosted it in three out of those four years, something that has never happened at Arrowhead.

Every year’s playoff loss seems to outdo the previous playoff loss in terms of embarrassment.

Losing to the Steelers in 2016 when they didn’t score a single touchdown was pretty bad, but the next year good ol’ KC followed it up with a disgustingly gross game against the Titans. They went up 21-3 at half time and ended up losing because they couldn’t stop the run. Oh and Marcus Mariota threw a touchdown pass to himself. YES, TO HIMSELF.

Being the punchline this time of year has gotten old, but fortunately there’s help on the way. At least that appears to be the consensus among most fans. Chiefs fans seem to have a different attitude surrounding them this year and the reason for that is pretty clear: The one, the only, Patrick Mahomes.

More from KC Kingdom

The 23-year old quarterback came into the league as a first-year starter (but not a rookie, let’s be clear about that) and lit it up, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. Any time number 15 has the ball in his hands, Chiefs Kingdom feels confident they can win the game.

While Mahomes is certainly an exciting player and has the ability to win games by his lonesome (see the Ravens game last month), the suspect defense in Kansas City is the biggest worry this time around.

They’ve been destroyed by good offenses all season long and now on the biggest stage and in the brightest of lights, they’ll be counted on to make several key stops in order to get an annoying monkey off this franchise’s back. I’m not feeling so great about that.

It’s understandable why fans hate this time of year. Every year we think it might be different only to lose and be let down. Losing is bad enough, but the Chiefs have made it a habit of losing in miserable fashion and being the butt of the jokes all offseason long.

Chiefs teams of seasons past have nothing to do with this year’s current team, but it’s still difficult not to think about all of those bad losses when playoff time rolls around. Fans can’t blame those of us who have a little bit more trouble buying in when every time we’ve tried to in the past, we’ve been let down big time.

Next. Chiefs that must step up vs Colts. dark

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game at Arrowhead since I was three years old, so yeah, to say I don’t have a ton of confidence in them would be an understatement. This could be the year that the victory finally happens, however, and if it does, let’s build Mahomes a freaking statue.
