While there’s still a postseason left to play, it’s hard to resist clicking on mock drafts. The Kansas City Chiefs added a defensive lineman in CBS Sports’ most recent mock.

Who can pass up a good ol’ mock draft? Any time one from a respectable source is published, I’m probably clicking on it. In the most recent CBS Sports mock draft, Will Brinson had the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Jeffery Simmons, a defensive lineman out of Mississippi State. Brinson wrote,

"Whatever the Chiefs do with this pick, it needs to involve defense and when it involves defense it better involve someone who can help stop the run."

Okay, this made me laugh because it’s all he wrote for the Chiefs’ selection and it’s 100% true. The Chiefs DO need to go defense with most of their 2019 draft selections and they desperately need a true run stopper. It appears that drafting Simmons would be a good move from what we know about him as a college player.

Simmons, who was a junior this past season at Mississippi State, totaled 163 tackles (33 for loss) and seven sacks throughout his three years as a Bulldog. In 2018 alone, he had 63 tackles (18 for loss), two sacks, four defended passes, and one forced fumble.

Simmons is a good tackler, judging from his numbers, and would definitely be a big piece to help the Chiefs fill their need at run defense. Anthony Hitchens hasn’t panned out and the Chiefs need to stop going after developmental players with their early draft picks and get this problem squared away.

Jeffery Simmons is someone who could come in and help the run defense right away and that’s much needed. He could help in other areas too, and despite only having two sacks last year, had five in 2017 and could pack a punch when it comes to getting after the quarterback.

This year’s draft is expected to be pretty defensive heavy and that bodes well for a defensive needy team in the Chiefs. The top six picks in this mock draft were on the defensive side of the ball and with so many of last year’s bad teams not needing to draft a quarterback, that means these top defensive players are going to be harder for a team like the Chiefs to obtain.

The rest of the AFC West chose these players in this particular mock draft:

  • Oakland Raiders – Josh Allen, OLB (Kentucky); Deionte Thompson, S (Alabama); Montez Sweat, EDGE (Mississippi State)
  • Denver Broncos – Greedy Williams, CB (LSU)
  • Los Angeles Chargers – Devin White, LB (LSU)

It’d be intriguing if all four AFC West teams went defensively in the first round, especially considering the Raiders have three freaking picks in round one. With how offensive heavy the league is now, it’s nice to see a wave of young defensive players coming in. The NFL needs that.

Simmons would be an able tackler in Kansas City and could hopefully come in immediately and help stuff the run. That’s something that has ailed this Chiefs team for a few seasons now and it has to get fixed if they want to make it to, let alone win, a Super Bowl.
