Unlike last year, the KC Chiefs will have a first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Matt Miller of Bleacher Report recently released his mock draft and has the Chiefs selecting… a running back? What?

While the Kansas City Chiefs are still in the hunt for a Super Bowl, it doesn’t hurt to look at a few mock drafts here and there. The latest comes from Matt Miller of Bleacher Report and poses an interesting situation for Chiefs fans… Would the team really spend a first round pick on a running back?

Miller, who has the Chiefs at the 31st overall pick, had the Chiefs going that route. He wrote,

"After releasing Kareem Hunt, Kansas City slowed down on offense. Andy Reid‘s offense has always leaned on backs for not just rushing yards but also help in the passing game."

The pick, by the way, is Josh Jacobs out of Alabama, who rushed for 11 touchdowns and 593 yards this year. The touchdown total is enticing for sure. I’m always skeptical of taking a running back out of Alabama though because of how dominant their offensive line is. Some Bama backs flourish in the pros, but others disappoint without that line blocking for them.

The biggest talking point with this pick, however, is that the Chiefs don’t need to take a running back in the first round for many reasons.

  1. They just signed Damien Williams to a two-year extension.
  2. The defense needs to be addressed with the first several picks.
  3. Running back isn’t a tough position to replace anymore.

With all of these reasons in mind, it’s tough to imagine the Kansas City Chiefs really going with a running back in round one. Jacobs is a good player, but there will be another talented player available in later rounds that could become something just as big with less risk.

Miller notes that the depth at cornerback in this class isn’t strong and that’s why he went running back at this spot, but even if that’s the case, why not add a safety? Why not go after someone to help stop the run? Cornerback isn’t the only position on defense that needs to be addressed.

Williams has done fine in his role considering what was asked of him and the Chiefs clearly think so by extending him. I’m all for adding another running back in the draft, but in the first round? That seems unnecessary considering the decline of the position over the years.
