KC Chiefs select safety in first round of CBS Sports mock draft
The regular season might still be going on, but mock drafts are hard to say no to. Who did the KC Chiefs go with in CBS Sports’ most recent mock?
It’s almost like a rule with me that if there’s a mock draft posted, no matter who did it, I have to read it to see who the Kansas City Chiefs would take in that mock draft.
Well, CBS Sports released their most recent mock draft and had the KC Chiefs going with a safety in the first round. The player? Taylor Rapp out of Washington.
"The Chiefs’ have needs all over their defense. And while it was great to see Eric Berry back on the field in Week 14, the K.C. defense has struggled for much of the season. Rapp is an adept playmaker, both against the pass and the run and would improve a replacement-level pass defense."
While some might rather see a cornerback selected here, I think a safety is a fine choice. Eric Murray, Ron Parker, and Daniel Sorenson are not the long-term answers at the position and we’re realizing that.
Fans have wanted to see Jordan Lucas get more of an opportunity, but if he can’t beat out the three I just named, how much better can he be? When push comes to shove, the only viable safety option that the Chiefs have is Eric Berry, and he’s just recently come back after being injured for well over a year.
Taylor Rapp is only a junior, but he’s been a productive player for the Huskies in his three-year career. This year, in 13 games, Rapp had 58 total tackles (five for loss), four sacks, four defended passes, two interceptions, and also recovered three fumbles.
As Ryan Wilson (the author of the mock draft) mentioned, Rapp would provide the Chiefs a decent option both against the pass and the run. Chiefs fans would definitely sign up to draft a player like Taylor Rapp.
Honestly, the Chiefs need to go almost all defense in next year’s draft, so it’s hard to be mad about them potentially adding a safety. Rapp is considered the fifth best safety in this draft, according to Walter Football.

Kansas City didn’t have a first round pick last year, so it’s fun to actually take part in these mock drafts this year. Hopefully the Chiefs go with a defensive prospect, but having such a late first round pick makes it hard for that player to be a surefire success.
What would you think if the KC Chiefs added Taylor Rapp to their team?
