The Nebraska football season just wrapped up a week ago, but it’s never too early to start talking Husker football! Fortunately, we can look at the 2019 schedule and dissect it a little bit.

While a 4-8 record wasn’t what Nebraska football fans envisioned for the first year under Scott Frost, it was actually a good 4-8 record if there’s such a thing. After going winless in their first six games, Nebraska reeled off four wins in their final six games. That has created quite a hype among the Husker faithful.

With that hype out there, the 2019 schedule is already getting marked down on calendars of Nebraska fans everywhere. While the season doesn’t kick off until August 31st, let’s go ahead and look at what next year’s schedule has in store for Big Red.

  • August 31st – South Alabama
  • September 7th – at Colorado
  • September 14th – Northern Illinois
  • September 21st – at Illinois
  • September 28th – Ohio State
  • October 5th – Northwestern
  • October 12th – at Minnesota
  • October 26th – Indiana
  • November 2nd – at Purdue
  • November 16th – Wisconsin
  • November 23rd – at Maryland
  • November 29th – Iowa

While it’s still super early and we don’t know what the 2019 season will entail for these opponents, it looks like a manageable schedule for the Cornhuskers. They have seven home games and five road games and all of their tough opponents will be playing in Lincoln rather than at their house.

The toughest opponents are Colorado, Ohio State, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Iowa, with all but one of those playing in Lincoln. The Colorado game is on the road, but Nebraska took the Buffs down to the wire this past season and this will very much be looked at as a revenge game.

This year’s game against Colorado should be different for a variety of reasons, but having a game prior to that will be crucial. One of the issues in last year’s loss was that the Huskers’ home opener against Akron was canceled and they went into the Colorado game without any experience.

Ohio State got a lot less tough with Urban Meyer on the way out. The Buckeyes also didn’t play their best ball against Nebraska this year and nearly got beat in Columbus. Hopefully Nebraska takes it to them next year.

Wisconsin and Iowa have both had the Huskers’ number over the years, but that could change in 2019. Nebraska is a different team with Scott Frost at the helm and both of those games are at home. That’s a game changer right there.

Obviously we know next to nothing about the teams for next year, but if I had to blindly guess a record for the 2019 season, I’d say six wins and a bowl appearance seem attainable, and they should do even better than that. Nebraska should easily win their games against South Alabama, Northern Illinois (who beat them in 2017), and Illinois. They also shouldn’t have much of an issue against Minnesota and Maryland.

Ohio State, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Iowa, Colorado, and even Purdue are the teams that could hand Nebraska losses next year, but I’m feeling very confident in the Huskers’ chances at a Big Ten West title in 2019. They have the right guy in charge and one of the most explosive quarterbacks at the helm.

Why shouldn’t Nebraska light the world on fire next season?
