Royals rumors aren’t going to be crazy this year, but former Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has been linked to the St. Louis Cardinals. Say it ain’t so, Moose!

When it comes to Royals rumors, usually we’re discussing players potentially joining the Kansas City Royals. Well, one tweet caught my attention, and it’s about Mike Moustakas.

Jon Heyman tweeted on Monday night that the St. Louis Cardinals were interested in signing Moustakas. This would be a huge slap in the face, as St. Louis is probably the LAST place fans would want to see any of the former Royals favorites go.

Heyman also mentioned the Brewers could be a landing spot for Moustakas too, which makes sense, considering he spent the last few months of the 2018 season there. He fit in well in Milwaukee, helping get the Brew Crew to Game 7 of the NLCS, but falling just short of the World Series.

There had been an article a few weeks ago linking Moustakas to the Royals again, but Kansas City is rebuilding. Third base is an area of concern with both Cheslor Cuthbert and Hunter Dozier looking less and less like the answer moving forward, but the two sides need to move on. Plus, Kelvin Gutierrez could be a solution at third base in the coming years.

As Heyman mentioned, there’s no draft choice attachment with Moustakas this time around, meaning he might be able to get more traction on the open market. Last year, Moustakas was still without a team when spring training started and that’s when he rejoined the team that initially drafted him.

The Cardinals need a third baseman and with Josh Donaldson off to Atlanta on a one-year deal, Moustakas could be a good fit in St. Louis unfortunately. The Cardinals haven’t been to the playoffs since 2015 (the year the Royals won the World Series in case you forgot) and that’s a long drought for them.

Moose has proven he can handle the pressure of the postseason and can still play stellar defense. He’s also good at the plate and can really play the long ball, which is what Royals fans loved about him, especially in 2017 when he broke the single-season home run record. All of these reasons make sense as to why St. Louis would be interested in Moustakas.

At the end of the day, Royals fans should want what’s best for Moose and if that’s with the Cardinals, then so be it. It’d be silly to be angry with him for doing what’s best for him and his family, especially after all that Mike Moustakas has done for the Kansas City Royals.

If Moustakas does end up signing with the Cardinals, of course I’ll still root for him. I will not be rooting for the team and the fans on the other side of the state though, just so we’re clear. Seriously though, best of luck to Moustakas and I hope he gets a long-term deal wherever he ends up… even if it is in St. Louis.
