As much as Kansas City Chiefs fans don’t like it, Bob Sutton is still the defensive coordinator and likely will be for the duration of the season. Here are some suggestions to what he can do to improve the defense.

I was part of the generation that grew up playing the popular Madden NFL games so to present you to some of the changes that probably need to happen, we are going to go about this article as if I were a Coordinator or the General Manager. This week’s article is over the Kansas City Chiefs defense with Bob Sutton. So without further ado, here we go.

Disclaimer: This has to be a realistic happening, so no there will be no answers such as “Quit” or change to a 4-3. As much as I ,who hates the way he runs the defense and has for years, would want that, it is not realistic that the move from him happens midseason.

The first change is something that no one has thought too much about. For the next month (with the exception of the Rams game because that would not end well), I would feature a very heavy appearance of Tanoh Kpassagnon and Breeland Speaks as your outside linebackers.

With Justin Houston still trying to stay healthy and the overall lack of talent in these offensive lines in the next few games, this would be the perfect time to give Kpass and Speaks reps. Both have shown up at times in their limited snap counts and this would be a good game to give them more experience.

That way if another injury comes along, they are not near as much of a liability. Both have showed promise and getting game experience under their belts would help them become more of a complete edge player.

The second change would be to the inside linebackers. It almost looks to this point, whatever is wrong with Anthony Hitchens this season, that rookie Dorian O’Daniel should be starting over him at least for the time being.

O’Daniel has shown to be better in man coverage and some zone coverage. This also combines with the fact that Hitchens has not been the run stopping threat that everybody was lead to believes.

Reggie Ragland has seemed to be a better run stopper at this point in the season and also has more experience with Sutton’s defense. This would make the choice to take Hitchens in place of O’Daniel that much simpler. It was also give O’Daniel more game experience to get him up to speed.

My next move is one that fans have clamored at when the Lucas Locomotive started getting steam. I would make Jordan Lucas and Eric Murray the starting safeties on this team with Daniel Sorensen going back to his third safety role.

That last part depends on how Sorensen looks coming back from his injury and if Eric Berry does not make it back to the field soon. Lucas and Murray have played more sound coverage than Ron Parker and these guys can also tackle a lot better than Parker.

The communication and awareness that Lucas and Murray provide is better than what you can get from Parker. I would also rather have young player mess up and get better, rather than older ones.

My final move is more of an attitude move. This is telling the players not to think so much. You may say “well they have to counter an offense’s plays”, and while that is true, the amount of hesitancy on this defense to react to plays is horrible.

It looks as if they were not sure of the call, or they are always being asked to read the offense, which should only be about half of the time, with the other half being them just performing their assignments.

This is what Sutton can do to help the defense at least the rest of the season and into the post season.
