The Royals rumors are slowly starting to heat up and someone predicted by an MLB Trade Rumors writer to land with the Kansas City Royals is pitcher Drew Pomeranz.

When looking ahead to what the 2018-2019 offseason has in store for the Kansas City Royals, no one is really expecting a ton of free agent signings. The Royals are in rebuild mode, meaning they’re going to let their young guys show what they’re capable of.

With that said, however, the Royals will need to bring in a few veterans this offseason and one linked to Kansas City was Drew Pomeranz. The two were linked together by Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors who wrote a piece on where the top 50 free agents will land moving forward.

Dierkes has the Royals agreeing to a deal with Pomeranz on a one-year deal worth $6 million. Dierkes writes,

More from KC Kingdom

"Pomeranz’s lost season could not have come at a worse time, but on the cusp of his 30th birthday, he’s an intriguing signing if he can stay healthy and recover some of his lost velocity.  He’ll probably prioritize a clear path to innings in a big park over signing with a contender."

This wouldn’t be a bad signing necessarily, but the Royals have other needs aside from starting pitching. They don’t even need a veteran presence to their rotation either, as the team has Danny Duffy and Ian Kennedy right now (though both could be traded over the winter).

Pomeranz is a talented pitcher, but injuries have plagued his career. Dierkes noted he missed some time with an injury and that a team like the Royals would be a better fit for him than a World Series contender.

Kansas City has been a place for broken pitchers to revive their career over the Dayton Moore era. Guys like Ryan Madson and Mike Minor signed with the Royals, pitched well out of the bullpen, and went on to sign nice contracts with other teams.

Pomeranz will turn 30 in a few weeks, but he might still have a chance to sign one more decent contract before it’s time to call it quits. He’s shown a lot of potential in the last few years, most recently in 2017 when he had a 2.47 ERA with the Padres before getting flipped to Boston at the trade deadline.

Last season wasn’t a good one for Pomeranz, as he had a 6.08 ERA in just 78 innings pitched. Injuries kept him off the mound a lot, but there’s still a lot left in the tank for Pomeranz.

If the Royals were to make this move, it’d be a better idea to utilize the Tennessee native in the bullpen over the rotation. The starting rotation looks to be pretty set (at least for the most part), so Pomeranz could be a reliever unless someone got hurt or struggled early on.

What would you think of the Royals bringing in Drew Pomeranz for a year?
