Nebraska football might not have beaten Ohio State on Saturday, but the Cornhuskers were in the game until the very end. This shows Scott Frost and his Huskers are on the right path.

Moral victories tend to be frowned upon in sports, but Nebraska fans should be excited for what the future has in store after the Cornhuskers barely lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday. Nebraska, who sat at 2-6 heading into the game, traveled to the 7-1 Buckeyes and lost by just five points.

Not only did Nebraska come close in this one, but they led several times against OSU. The Huskers took the lead in the first quarter to go up 7-0 and then would lead again at half time by a score of 21-16.

While Ohio State took control of the game in the third quarter, Nebraska didn’t give up and the game came down to the final minute, but the Huskers were unable to get a stop. Even with the loss, however, the fact that the Huskers were hanging with the Buckeyes until the end of regulation shows that progress is being made.

Frost may have started his Husker coaching career at 0-6, but the Huskers were never as bad as that 0-6 record indicated. In fact, when looking at all of Nebraska’s games this year, the Cornhuskers have been competitive in all but one.

The one embarrassing loss was the game at Michigan early in the year, but we’ve seen now just how good the Wolverines are in 2018 so that blowout loss doesn’t seem nearly as brutal now.

While Nebraska won’t be playing in a bowl game this year, there’s been a lot of good to take away from this season. Next to Frost being at the helm, the biggest reason to give this fan base hope moving forward is true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, who has been absolutely sensational over the last month.

Martinez continued to shine in Columbus, going 22 of 33 for 266 yards and a touchdown while adding another 72 yards on the ground with two rushing scores.

With how great Martinez has played recently, Cornhusker fans should be ecstatic for what this team could look like not only next year, but in 2020 as well. This kid could be a potential Heisman Trophy nominee in the coming years and he will be the biggest reason to believe in Nebraska’s resurgence. Frost is the reason Martinez is in Nebraska and these two are only going to get more and more comfortable with each other as the season progresses.

Fans knew it’d take a bit of time for the Cornhuskers to get completely back to prominence, but we’re seeing now that progress is being made and that’s exciting. Losing sucks, but it was hard to be too angry over this loss, as Nebraska played really well.

Nebraska football won’t be going to a bowl game in Frost’s first year, but that’s okay. What matters moving forward is for this team to continue to get better. If this young team can learn from their mistakes and close the season out on a high note (maybe blowing out Iowa?), then there will be a lot to be excited for when the 2019 season gets here.

Go Big Red!
