Kansas City Chiefs: Bengals have had Chiefs number over last decade
With their first loss in the books, the Kansas City Chiefs now turn around and play on Sunday Night Football yet again. This time, however, it’s at Arrowhead and against a team that has had KC’s number recently: The Cincinnati Bengals.
October 14th, 2007. That’s the last time the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the regular season. Since then, the Bengals have beaten the Chiefs four straight times and are looking to make it five straight this Sunday night under the lights at Arrowhead Stadium.
Some Chiefs fans might look at this game and wave it off. After all, the Bengals have been a team almost as hapless as the Chiefs during their tenure, especially in the playoffs. You think the Chiefs are bad in the playoffs? The Bengals haven’t won a postseason game since the early 1990s. At least the Chiefs broke their painful streak a few seasons ago (even if fans choose not to remember it).
Realistic Chiefs fans, however, know that this game wouldn’t have been flexed into Sunday Night Football if the Bengals weren’t a worthy foe. They’re 4-2 to start the year and have surprised a lot of people with their hot start.

The Bengals took down the Ravens in week two and also added an impressive win against the Miami Dolphins in which they managed to come back from a 17-0 deficit and win 27-17. In other words, these Bengals are not to be taken lightly.
Throw in Cincy’s talent this year along with the fact that the Bengals haven’t lost to Kansas City in over a decade and it’s natural for fans to think of this as a potential trap game. Here are the scores from the last four times the Chiefs and Bengals squared off:
- October 4th, 2015 – Bengals 36, Chiefs 21
- November 18th, 2012 – Bengals 28, Chiefs 6
- December 27th, 2009 – Bengals 17, Chiefs 10
- December 28th, 2008 – Bengals 16, Chiefs 6
The Chiefs and Bengals really haven’t played much since Andy Reid took over, with the only time coming in 2015 when the Chiefs started off 1-5 and the Bengals were a playoff team. Otherwise, it’s mostly been the Steelers that the Chiefs have seen from the AFC North.
So while some might say history doesn’t matter because of where the Chiefs are now, it’s still important to note that this is a team that hasn’t lost to Kansas City in over a decade and Marvin Lewis has been the coach there that entire time. Maybe Lewis knows what makes the Chiefs tick.
The biggest question in this game will be which defense can make more stops? The Chiefs defense is a dumpster fire, but Cincinnati’s defense is trash too. That will, in all likelihood, lead us to the Chiefs’ second straight shootout on Sunday Night Football, which might be just fine with Chiefs fans because… Well, Patrick Mahomes is fun to watch.
For what it’s worth, I think the Kansas City Chiefs will win on Sunday night, but they haven’t performed well against the Bengals in the last ten years. Hopefully that losing streak to Cincinnati is broken on Sunday and the Chiefs can move to 6-1 on the season!
