CHIEFS HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO BREATHE COMFORTABLY LATE IN THE GAME

While it was a great day for the Chiefs overall, no one would confuse any of them for MLB great Mariano Rivera.

The New York Yankees star closer is the game’s all-time leader in saves and a sure-fire Hall of Famer. There is perhaps no one in sports more who personified the feeling of knowing a game was over before it actually was.

The Chiefs could learn a thing or two from him.

More from KC Kingdom

Kansas City entered the game ranked 20th in second-half points allowed at 14.8, and gave up all 14 after halftime on Sunday. It would be hard to argue that Jacksonville ever had a chance to win this game in the fourth quarter, but the onside kick had to make fans a little uneasy.

The offense eventually fizzled while the Chiefs’ defense shined, but it would have been nice to see KC keep its foot on Jacksonville’s neck and win this one going away.

Despite scoring a league-high 175 points, the Chiefs’ plus-46 point scoring margin is the same as the Chicago Bears and 29 points behind the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s hard to argue this is a big issue for a team that is 5-0, but as any coach will tell you, there always room for improvement.

With the Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals on the schedule the next two weeks, grinding out any kind of win should be good enough. The next true test for a blowout will be when the Denver Broncos come to town on Oct. 28.

If they can grab a lead and shut the door on Denver without ever allowing the Broncos to think they have a shot at coming back, Rivera would certainly be proud.
